FJ Cruiser: Rough idle, stumbling or a misfire code (P0300 to P0306)

Checks, in order

  1. Read the codes
A single-cylinder code like P0304 means a coil, plug or injector on that cylinder. P0300 on its own is random and often a lean or vacuum problem.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Idle relearn after a battery disconnect
Let it idle fully warm for several minutes with all accessories off. If the rough idle remains after that, ask a dealer about the idle relearn bulletin for your year.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Plugs and coils
Pull the coil from the misfiring cylinder and inspect the plug. Swap that coil with another cylinder's and see if the misfire follows it.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  4. Throttle body and intake leaks
Clean the throttle body and inspect the intake boot and PCV hoses for cracks. Spray cleaner near hoses with the engine idling and listen for a change.
    medium $ · under about $50
  5. Injector or compression
If the plug and coil swaps do not move the misfire, test the injector (listen with a stethoscope) and run a compression test on that cylinder.
    hard $$ · about $50 to $500

Applies to: US-market FJ Cruiser, 2007 to 2014, with the 1GR-FE 4.0L V6 (timing chain) and either the 5-speed automatic or the 6-speed manual. Assumes the part-time 4WD model with a floor-mounted transfer case lever; 2WD trucks skip the 4WD checks.
