1st Gen Tacoma: Rough idle, misfire or lean codes (P0171, P0174, P0300)

Checks, in order

  1. Read codes and note which cylinder
A scan tool will show a specific misfire cylinder or a bank lean code. That narrows the search a lot.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Vacuum leaks
Look over every hose and the intake boot for cracks. Spray carb cleaner or propane lightly near joints with the engine idling; an idle change points to the leak.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor
Pull the plugs and look at their condition. Replace worn plugs and wires with a matching set per the manual.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Throttle body and idle control
Clean the throttle plate and idle air passages with throttle body cleaner. Carbon buildup causes a hunting or low idle.
    easy $ · under about $50
  5. MAF sensor and PCV
Clean the MAF with a spray made for it and check the PCV valve and hoses. A stuck PCV causes lean idle and oil use.
    easy $ · under about $50
  6. Fuel injectors and compression
If basics pass, check injector balance and run a compression test. Consider a shop for this.
    hard $$ · about $50 to $500

Applies to: 1995.5 to 2004 Tacoma with the 2RZ-FE 2.4L, 3RZ-FE 2.7L and 5VZ-FE 3.4L V6, 2WD, PreRunner and 4WD. Code-based checks assume OBD-II (1996 and newer); earlier trucks may use a different diagnostic setup.
