FJ Cruiser: Check engine light with P0171 or P0174 (system too lean)

Checks, in order

  1. Air filter and intake boot
Check that the air filter is seated and the intake tube between the MAF and throttle body is not cracked or loose. Air that gets in after the MAF is not measured.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Clean the MAF sensor
Spray only MAF cleaner on the sensor element and let it dry fully. Do not touch the wires. Replace if the codes return.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Vacuum and PCV hoses
Inspect the PCV hose, brake booster hose and any small vacuum lines for cracks, and check that the oil filler cap seals. Listen for a hiss at idle.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Fuel pressure
Low pressure from a clogged filter or weak pump can cause a lean code on both banks. Test at the rail.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  5. Exhaust leak ahead of the sensors
A leak at the manifold or flex joint can let in air and fool the air-fuel sensors. Look for soot trails and listen for ticking that fades as the engine warms.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500

Applies to: US-market FJ Cruiser, 2007 to 2014, with the 1GR-FE 4.0L V6 (timing chain) and either the 5-speed automatic or the 6-speed manual. Assumes the part-time 4WD model with a floor-mounted transfer case lever; 2WD trucks skip the 4WD checks.
