FJ Cruiser: Steering wheel shimmy or flutter at highway speed

Safety: A violent shake that returns after hitting a bump is a loose or worn front end. Stop driving until it is inspected.

Checks, in order

  1. Tire and wheel balance
Have the wheels road-force balanced rather than just spin balanced. Heavy off-road tires and aftermarket wheels are more likely to be out of round or to need more weight.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Swap tires front to rear
Move the front wheels to the back and drive again. If the shake changes or moves to the seat, one of those tires or wheels is the problem.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Tire condition and pressure
Look for cupping, flat spots, bubbles or uneven wear and set all four pressures to the door sticker. Mismatched pressures or a bent wheel can start the shimmy.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Wheel bearings and hub fit
Lift each front wheel, grab at 12 and 6 o'clock and rock it. Play or a rumble when you spin it means a bearing. On aftermarket wheels, confirm the center bore fits the hub or use proper hub-centric rings.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  5. Tie rod ends, ball joints and control arm bushings
With the front end up, check each joint for play with a pry bar and by pushing and pulling the wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock. Replace worn parts and align afterward.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500

Applies to: US-market FJ Cruiser, 2007 to 2014, with the 1GR-FE 4.0L V6 (timing chain) and either the 5-speed automatic or the 6-speed manual. Assumes the part-time 4WD model with a floor-mounted transfer case lever; 2WD trucks skip the 4WD checks.
