FJ Cruiser: Engine cranks normally but won't start

Checks, in order

  1. Fuel pump prime
Turn the key to ON and listen at the rear for the pump to hum for a couple of seconds. No sound points to a fuse, relay or the pump itself.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Fuses and relays
Check the fuel pump and EFI fuses and relay in the engine bay fuse box. Swap the relay with a matching one if it is available.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Security light
A flashing immobilizer light after cranking means the computer is blocking fuel or spark. Try the spare key and check the key battery.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Fuel pressure
Use a gauge on the fuel rail to confirm pressure when the key is turned on. Low pressure with a running pump means a clogged filter, regulator issue or weak pump.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  5. Crankshaft position sensor and spark
Scan for sensor codes and look for a tach signal while cranking. If there is none, the crank position sensor is the likely fault. Confirm spark at a plug with a spark tester.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500

Applies to: US-market FJ Cruiser, 2007 to 2014, with the 1GR-FE 4.0L V6 (timing chain) and either the 5-speed automatic or the 6-speed manual. Assumes the part-time 4WD model with a floor-mounted transfer case lever; 2WD trucks skip the 4WD checks.
