3rd Gen Tacoma: Rough idle, shaking at a stop or misfire (P0300 to P0306)

Checks, in order

  1. Scan data and cylinder
Note whether it is one cylinder (P0301 to P0306) or random (P0300). One cylinder means coil, plug or injector at that spot.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Spark plugs and coils
Swap the suspect coil with a neighboring cylinder and see if the misfire code follows. If it does, replace that coil. Check plugs for wear at the same time.
    medium $ · under about $50
  3. Air leaks and intake tubing
Look for cracked intake hoses, loose clamps and an unplugged PCV hose. Unmetered air causes rough idle and often a lean code too.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Throttle body cleaning
A dirty throttle body can make idle hunt. Clean it with throttle body cleaner, following the service manual since the throttle is electronic.
    medium $ · under about $50
  5. Injector and compression check
If coils and plugs are fine, a shop can test injector function and do a compression or leak-down test on the misfiring cylinder.
    hard $$$ · shop-level job, $500+

Applies to: 2016 to 2023 Tacoma with the 2TR-FE 2.7L four and the 2GR-FKS 3.5L V6, with the 6-speed automatic or 6-speed manual. Engine-specific checks are labeled; everything else applies to both.
