4th Gen Tacoma: Rough idle, misfire or shaking at a stop

Checks, in order

  1. Scan data and cylinder
Read the codes and note if the misfire is on one cylinder or random.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Spark plugs and coils
Swap a suspect coil to another cylinder and see if the misfire follows. Turbo engines are hard on plugs, so check gap and wear.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  3. Intake leaks and PCV
Inspect hoses and connections for cracks or a loose PCV line, which cause lean idle and codes.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Fuel quality
A bad tank of fuel can cause stumble and misfire. Fill with top tier fuel and see if the problem clears.
    easy $ · under about $50
  5. Injector and compression check
If the simple items are good, a shop can test injectors and run a compression or leak-down test.
    hard $$$ · shop-level job, $500+

Applies to: 2024 and newer Tacoma with the 2.4L turbo i-FORCE (T24A-FTS) and the i-FORCE MAX hybrid, with the 8-speed automatic or the 6-speed manual. Platform is new, so checks lean on general practice and are labeled where they apply to only one powertrain.
