80 Series Land Cruiser: Turn the key: click or nothing, engine won't crank

Checks, in order

  1. Battery voltage
Resting voltage should be about 12.4 V or more. Under 12 V, charge and load-test the battery before chasing anything else.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Terminals and grounds
Clean and tighten both battery terminals, the engine-to-body ground strap and the starter cable. Corrosion here causes the same click.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Shift lever position
On automatics, try starting in Neutral. A worn neutral safety switch can block cranking in Park.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Starter solenoid contacts
Intermittent click with a good battery is the classic worn-contact symptom. On the 1FZ-FE the starter sits under the intake manifold, so many owners replace the contacts or starter while the intake is off for other work.
    hard $$ · about $50 to $500

Applies to: FZJ80 (1993–1997 US, 1FZ-FE), Lexus LX 450 (1996–1997), FJ80 (1991–1992 US, 3F-E). Engine checks assume the 1FZ-FE unless noted.
