80 Series Land Cruiser: White smoke, sweet smell or coolant disappearing

Checks, in order

  1. External coolant leaks
Heater hoses at the back of the head and the rear heater lines leak often and can mimic coolant 'consumption'. Fix any of these first.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Oil condition
Milky or tan sludge on the dipstick or under the oil cap means coolant in the oil. Stop driving and diagnose.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Chemical block test
A combustion-leak test kit on the radiator neck detects exhaust gas in the coolant. Cheap and decisive.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Compression and leak-down
A low cylinder, or air bubbling into the coolant during a leak-down test, confirms the gasket and shows which cylinder.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  5. Plan the repair
A head gasket job is a good time to do the heater hoses and other while-you're-in-there parts. Have the head checked for flatness at a machine shop.
    hard $$$ · shop-level job, $500+
