80 Series Land Cruiser: Battery keeps dying or voltage gauge reads low

Checks, in order

  1. Charging voltage
Engine running, measure at the battery: roughly 13.8–14.4 V is healthy. Lower points at the alternator or belt.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Drive belt
Check belt tension and glazing. A slipping belt undercharges and often squeals on startup.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Alternator brushes
Worn brushes are a common cause of low output on high-mileage alternators and can be replaced on a rebuild.
    medium $ · under about $50
  4. Parasitic drain
Key off, meter in series on the negative cable, then pull fuses one at a time to find the circuit. Aftermarket accessories are frequent offenders.
    medium $ · under about $50
