80 Series Land Cruiser: Clunk on takeoff or vibration that grows with speed

Checks, in order

  1. Grease the driveshafts
Grease every U-joint and the slip yokes, including the double-cardan joint where fitted. Many clunks disappear right here.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. U-joint play
With the truck safely supported, twist each shaft by hand. Any free play or notchiness at a joint means replacement.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Mounts and fasteners
Check transmission and transfer case mounts, driveshaft flange bolts and rear axle components for looseness.
    medium $ · under about $50
  4. Driveline angles after a lift
Vibration that started after a lift points at driveshaft angles. Corrections include caster or pinion correction and transfer case drop kits, depending on the setup.
    hard $$ · about $50 to $500
