FJ Cruiser: Turn the key: click or nothing, engine won't crank

Checks, in order

  1. Battery voltage
Resting voltage should be about 12.4 V or more. Under 12 V, charge and load-test the battery before chasing anything else.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Terminals and grounds
Clean and tighten both battery terminals and the ground strap from the engine to the body and frame. Corrosion makes the same click as a dead battery.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Shift position or clutch switch
On automatics, try starting in Neutral. On the manual, press the clutch fully down. A neutral safety or clutch start switch that is out of adjustment can block cranking.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Immobilizer and key
If the security light stays on or flashes, try the spare key. A weak key battery or immobilizer fault can stop the starter from being allowed to run.
    easy $ · under about $50
  5. Starter and solenoid
A single click with a good battery and clean cables points to the starter solenoid contacts. Have the starter bench tested or replace it.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500

Applies to: US-market FJ Cruiser, 2007 to 2014, with the 1GR-FE 4.0L V6 (timing chain) and either the 5-speed automatic or the 6-speed manual. Assumes the part-time 4WD model with a floor-mounted transfer case lever; 2WD trucks skip the 4WD checks.
