4th Gen Tacoma: Hesitation or clunk when pulling away or shifting from Park to Drive

Checks, in order

  1. Start-stop and drive mode
Turn off auto start-stop and compare. A restart delay at the light can feel like transmission hesitation.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Cold vs warm
Note if the clunk only happens when cold. Mild cold behavior is often normal, while a hot delay deserves a dealer visit.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Mounts and driveline lash
Have a helper shift Park to Drive and Reverse while you look at the engine, transmission mount and driveshaft for movement.
    medium $ · under about $50
  4. Open bulletins and codes
Ask the dealer to check for bulletins and read stored codes. A shift complaint should be on the repair order.
    easy $ · under about $50

Applies to: 2024 and newer Tacoma with the 2.4L turbo i-FORCE (T24A-FTS) and the i-FORCE MAX hybrid, with the 8-speed automatic or the 6-speed manual. Platform is new, so checks lean on general practice and are labeled where they apply to only one powertrain.
