4th Gen Tacoma: Push the button: nothing happens, dead dash or slow crank

Checks, in order

  1. 12 V battery voltage
Resting voltage should be about 12.4 V or more. Under 12 V, charge and load-test the battery.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Terminals and grounds
Clean and tighten the battery clamps and ground points. Corrosion gives the same symptoms as a dead battery.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Key fob battery
If the truck does not recognize the key, replace the fob battery and follow the manual's backup-start method of holding the fob to the button.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Accessories and parasitic draw
Unplug dash cams, trackers and aftermarket gear, then see if the battery holds. A multimeter in series measures the draw once the truck sleeps.
    medium $ · under about $50
  5. Starter circuit (non-hybrid)
A good battery with no crank on the 2.4L turbo points to the starter circuit or related relays. On hybrids, send no-READY faults to a hybrid-trained technician.
    hard $$ · about $50 to $500

Applies to: 2024 and newer Tacoma with the 2.4L turbo i-FORCE (T24A-FTS) and the i-FORCE MAX hybrid, with the 8-speed automatic or the 6-speed manual. Platform is new, so checks lean on general practice and are labeled where they apply to only one powertrain.
