Toyota Maintenance Schedule: Every Model's Intervals in One Place

Toyota Maintenance Schedule: Every Model's Intervals in One Place

Toyota uses the same basic schedule for every model it sells in the US: a visit every 5,000 miles, oil every second visit, filters at 30,000, coolant at 100,000. The differences between models come down to a few items. The spark plug interval is the biggest one, and it changed a lot when Toyota moved its trucks and SUVs to turbocharged engines. A 2024 Tacoma needs plugs at 40,000 miles; a 2023 Tacoma V6 doesn't need them until 60,000. This page explains how the schedule works, compares the main intervals across Toyota's current and recent models in one table, and links to our full mileage-by-mileage checklist for each model.

Where this comes from. Truck and SUV rows that have their own toyotadata schedule guide use the numbers from that guide; each guide was compiled from Toyota's Warranty and Maintenance Guide for the model. For the Highlander, Camry, Corolla, Land Cruiser 250, 3rd gen Sequoia and 6th gen 4Runner, we read the maintenance charts in Toyota's 2025 (and where listed, 2026) Warranty and Maintenance Guides, plus the oil specs in the 2025 owner's manuals, all from Toyota's publication server. ToyotaCare terms are from toyota.com. Toyota prints a guide for every model year and engine, and they do change, so the guide for your own vehicle is the final word. Where we couldn't confirm a number, the table says "see model guide" instead of guessing.

How Toyota's Schedule Works

One visit every 5,000 miles or 6 months. Toyota's guides say to have the vehicle serviced every 5,000 miles or six months, whichever comes first. If you drive 5,000 miles in four months, go at 5,000. If you've only driven 3,000 miles after six months, go at six months. Every visit includes:

  • Rotating the tires
  • Checking all fluid levels (Toyota's footnote: sealed transmissions, transfer cases and differentials are checked for leaks)
  • A visual brake inspection; pad thickness and rotor runout are measured every 30,000 miles
  • Checking the wiper blades and that the driver's floor mat is secured
  • On hybrids, a check of the HV battery cooling intake filter

Oil every 10,000 miles or 12 months. Toyota's footnote says to change the oil and filter after 12 months or 10,000 miles, even if the maintenance reminder hasn't come on. That applies to engines filled with their specified low-viscosity oil: 0W-20 on the trucks, 0W-16 on the RAV4 and Highlander Hybrid, 0W-8 on the current Camry and Corolla. Older truck guides add one rule: if 5W-20 was used because 0W-20 wasn't available, change it at 5,000 miles and go back to 0W-20.

"Inspect" vs "replace." In Toyota's charts, I means inspect and correct if needed, R means replace at that visit regardless of condition, and T means torque. A lot of items on the list, including transmission fluid and the differentials on most models, are only ever marked I on the normal schedule.

Every 15,000 miles on trucks and AWD vehicles. The 15,000-mile visits add an underbody inspection: ball joints, brake lines, CV boots, exhaust, steering linkage, the radiator, and the differential oil. On body-on-frame trucks, Toyota also torques (and on older trucks greases) the propeller shaft at these visits.

Special Operating Conditions

Every Toyota guide has a second chart called "Special Operating Conditions." Toyota says to follow it only if you drive primarily under the condition listed. An occasional trail weekend or one trip with a rented trailer does not count. A truck that lives on a gravel road, or tows a camper every weekend all summer, does.

CONDITION WHAT CHANGES (TYPICAL)
Dirt or dusty roads Oil and filter every 5,000 miles; engine air filter inspected every visit; ball joints, CV boots and steering linkage inspected more often; transfer case oil replaced on 4WD trucks
Short trips under 5 miles in freezing weather Oil and filter every 5,000 miles or 6 months
Towing, a roof carrier or heavy loads Differential and transfer case oil replaced (every 15,000 to 30,000 depending on model); automatic transmission fluid replaced at 60,000 and 120,000; chassis bolts torqued; oil every 5,000 on the truck guides
Extended idling or low-speed driving (police, taxi, delivery) Oil every 5,000 on many guides; automatic transmission fluid replaced at 60,000 on many models
Roads with road salt Propeller shaft bolts torqued (or greased, on older trucks) every 5,000 miles

The exact items vary by model. The 2025 Camry guide only lists towing as the trigger for its transmission fluid change, for example, while the 2025 Highlander, RAV4, Corolla, Tacoma, 4Runner and Land Cruiser charts list towing or extended idling. Each model guide below has its own special-conditions table.

Every Model's Key Intervals

Normal-use intervals in miles. "Inspect" means the item is only checked on the normal schedule. "Severe" means Toyota's special operating conditions chart. Coolant is Toyota Super Long Life Coolant in every case, and every row changes it every 50,000 miles after the first change.

Grand Highlander Hybrid and Hybrid MAX, RAV4 Prime and RAV4 Hybrid, Corolla Hybrid, Tacoma i-FORCE MAX, Tundra i-FORCE MAX: see the model guides. Hybrids add items such as the HV battery cooling intake filter and a separate inverter coolant interval, and their oil grades can differ from the gas versions. The 2026 RAV4 is a new generation; its 2026 guide lists plugs at 120,000 and inverter coolant at 150,000, but check the RAV4 guide before applying 2025 numbers to it.

What the Table Shows

  • Turbo engines need plugs three times as often. Every turbocharged Toyota on the list (2.4L turbo four, 3.4L twin-turbo V6) is on a 40,000-mile plug interval. The naturally aspirated V6s and V8s, and the non-turbo four-cylinders, go to 120,000. The 3rd gen Tacoma's 3.5L V6 sits in between at 60,000.
  • The Camry changes its cabin filter every 10,000 miles. The 2025 and 2026 Camry charts mark the cabin air filter R at every 10,000-mile visit. Every other model on the list goes 30,000 (or 20,000 on the 3rd gen Tacoma).
  • Coolant is the same everywhere. Every model in the table changes engine coolant first at 100,000 miles or 120 months, then every 50,000 miles or 60 months. On turbo engines the intercooler coolant follows the same schedule. Hybrids change the separate inverter coolant first at 150,000 miles or 180 months.
  • No model in the table changes transmission fluid on the normal schedule. Toyota calls the fluid long-life and only inspects it. Many owners change it anyway around 60,000 miles, especially on trucks that tow. That is an owner choice, not Toyota's schedule.

Trucks: Diffs and Transfer Case

Body-on-frame Toyotas carry extra gear-oil items that cars and crossovers don't. Under normal use, Toyota only inspects the differentials and transfer case. Under special conditions they get changed:

MODEL TOWING / HEAVY LOADS DIRT OR DUSTY ROADS
Tacoma 3rd gen, 4Runner 5th gen Front and rear diff oil every 15,000; transfer case oil every 30,000 Transfer case oil every 30,000
Tacoma 4th gen, 4Runner 6th gen Front and rear diff oil every 15,000; transfer case oil every 30,000 Transfer case oil every 30,000
Tundra (both gens), Sequoia 2nd gen Front diff every 15,000; rear diff and transfer case every 30,000 Transfer case oil every 30,000
Land Cruiser 250 Front diff every 15,000; rear diff and transfer case every 30,000 Transfer case oil every 30,000
Grand Highlander and Highlander (gas AWD) Rear diff and transfer case oil replaced every 30,000 on the normal schedule, and also at the 15,000-mile midpoints under towing See model guide

The Highlander and Grand Highlander are the odd ones: their gas AWD charts replace the rear diff and transfer case oil every 30,000 miles on the normal schedule. Check the fluid type before you buy. Toyota's transfer cases on the Tacoma, 4Runner and Tundra take Toyota Transfer Gear Oil LF, not differential gear oil; the 2nd gen Sequoia's transfer case takes 75W-90 GL-5. The fluid capacity guides have the details.

ToyotaCare: What's Free and for How Long

ToyotaCare is Toyota's no-cost maintenance plan that comes with every new Toyota. It covers normal factory scheduled maintenance, which means the items on the normal chart (oil and filter, tire rotations, inspections), not the special-conditions items or repairs.

MODEL YEAR NO-COST MAINTENANCE ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE
2026 and earlier 2 years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first 2 years, unlimited miles
2027 1 year or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first 2 years from date of first use, unlimited miles
bZ, bZ Woodland, bZ4X 2 years or 25,000 miles 3 years, unlimited miles
Mirai 3 years or 35,000 miles 3 years

On a 2026 or earlier Toyota, that is usually five free visits: 5,000, 10,000, 15,000, 20,000 and 25,000 miles, including two oil changes. On a 2027, it is the 5,000 and 10,000-mile visits. After ToyotaCare, Toyota sells ToyotaCare Plus and other prepaid plans through dealers. Terms change, so confirm with your dealer when you buy.

Keeping Your Warranty Intact

Toyota's guides say the vehicle has to be maintained to keep warranty coverage, and that the work can be done by a dealer or any other service provider. What matters is that the maintenance is done and you can prove it. Keep receipts for oil, filters and fluids, and log the date and mileage of every service. Toyota's guides also say spark plug service is required under the emissions warranty, so keep the receipt for the plugs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does a Toyota need an oil change?

Every 10,000 miles or 12 months on modern Toyotas that use 0W-8, 0W-16 or 0W-20, per Toyota's maintenance guides. Change it every 5,000 miles or 6 months if most of your driving is on dirt or dusty roads or short trips in freezing weather; the truck guides also put towing and long idling on the 5,000-mile schedule. The 2007–2009 FJ Cruiser and other older 5W-30 engines are on a 5,000-mile interval.

When do Toyota spark plugs need to be changed?

It depends on the engine. The 2.4L turbo (2024+ Tacoma, 2025+ 4Runner, Land Cruiser 250, Highlander, Grand Highlander) and the 3.4L twin-turbo V6 (2022+ Tundra, 2023+ Sequoia) get new plugs every 40,000 miles. The 3rd gen Tacoma 3.5L V6 is 60,000 and 120,000. The 4.0L V6, the 5.7L V8 and the non-turbo four-cylinders in the RAV4, Camry, Corolla and Highlander Hybrid go 120,000 miles.

Does Toyota say to change the transmission fluid?

Not on the normal schedule. Toyota inspects the transmission fluid (or checks it for leaks) and only lists a replacement under special operating conditions, usually at 60,000 and 120,000 miles for towing, and on many models for extended idling or low-speed driving.

What does ToyotaCare cover, and for how long?

Normal factory scheduled maintenance, such as oil changes, tire rotations and inspections, plus roadside assistance. On 2026 and earlier models it runs 2 years or 25,000 miles; for 2027 models Toyota cut it to 1 year or 10,000 miles. Roadside assistance runs 2 years with unlimited miles.

When should Toyota coolant be changed?

The first engine coolant change is at 100,000 miles or 120 months, then every 50,000 miles or 60 months, on every model in our table. Turbo engines change the intercooler coolant on the same schedule. Hybrids change the inverter coolant first at 150,000 miles or 180 months.

Do I have to use the dealer to keep my Toyota warranty?

No. Toyota's guides say the work can be done by a dealer or another service provider. Keep receipts and a log of dates and mileage, because the warranty depends on the maintenance being done and documented.
