The Tundra is one of the few Toyotas where the fluid specs changed completely between generations. The 2022 redesign swapped the 5.7 V8 for a twin-turbo V6, moved to electric power steering, and switched the transfer case from gear oil to ATF. If you take a 2nd gen spec sheet to a 3rd gen truck, you will put the wrong fluid in the transfer case. Every number below comes from Toyota's own owner's manuals for the 2016, 2020 and 2024 Tundra.
Read this first. Toyota lists these as reference capacities. Engine oil is filled to the dipstick, the automatic transmission is filled at its overflow plug using Toyota's temperature-check procedure, and gear oil is filled to the bottom of the fill hole. Where a value depends on options (tow package, cab, bed, locker), the table splits it.
2nd Gen Tundra (2014–2021): 5.7L and 4.6L V8
From the 2020 Tundra owner's manual (5.7L 3UR-FE only, the 4.6L was dropped after 2019) and the 2016 manual, which covers the 4.6L 1UR-FE, the 5.7L and the 5.7L flex-fuel 3UR-FBE.
| FLUID | TYPE | CAPACITY |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil, 5.7L (3UR-FE) | SAE 0W-20 (5W-20 OK until the next change) | 8.5 qt / 8.0 L with filter, 7.9 qt without (2020 manual). The 2016 manual lists 7.9 qt with filter, 7.5 without |
| Engine oil, 4.6L (1UR-FE) | SAE 0W-20 | 7.9 qt / 7.5 L with filter (2016 manual) |
| Coolant, 5.7L | Toyota Super Long Life Coolant | 11.4 qt / 10.8 L; 12.4 qt / 11.7 L with towing package |
| Coolant, 4.6L | Toyota Super Long Life Coolant | 11.4 qt; 12.6 qt / 11.9 L with towing package |
| Automatic transmission (6-speed) | Toyota Genuine ATF WS | 5.7L: 11.7 qt / 11.1 L (12.3 qt with towing package in the 2016 manual). 4.6L: 11.6 qt 2WD, 11.3 qt 4WD |
| Transfer case (4WD) | Toyota Genuine Transfer Gear Oil LF, SAE 75W | 1.6 qt / 1.5 L |
| Front differential (4WD) | Toyota LT 75W-85 GL-5 | 2.2 qt / 2.05 L |
| Rear differential, 5.7L | Toyota LT 75W-85 GL-5 | Double Cab standard bed and Regular Cab 3.8 qt; Double Cab long bed 4.0 qt; CrewMax 2WD 4.0 qt; CrewMax 4WD 3.8 qt |
| Rear differential, 4.6L | Toyota LT 75W-85 GL-5 | 4.9 qt / 4.6 L (2016 manual) |
| Power steering | DEXRON II or III ATF | n/a |
| Brake fluid | DOT 3 (SAE J1703) | n/a |
| Propeller shaft spiders (4WD) | Lithium-base chassis grease, NLGI No. 2 | n/a |
Why two oil capacities for the 5.7? Toyota's 2016 manual prints 7.9 qt with filter and the 2020 manual prints 8.5 qt, for the same engine. Either way, the dipstick is the final word: fill to the lower of the two, run the engine, wait, and top up to the full mark.
Spark plugs: DENSO SK20HR11 iridium, gap 0.043 in. (1.1 mm), on every V8. Do not regap iridium plugs.
3rd Gen Tundra (2022+): i-FORCE 3.4L Twin-Turbo V6
From the 2024 Tundra owner's manual for the gasoline i-FORCE V35A engine. The i-FORCE MAX hybrid adds hybrid system cooling that this table does not cover; check your truck's own manual for its capacities.
| FLUID | TYPE | CAPACITY |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil (V35A) | SAE 0W-20 (5W-20 OK until the next change) | 7.7 qt / 7.3 L with filter; 7.4 qt / 7.0 L without |
| Engine coolant | Toyota Super Long Life Coolant | 13.1 qt / 12.4 L |
| Intercooler coolant (separate circuit) | Toyota Super Long Life Coolant | 4.6 qt / 4.4 L |
| Automatic transmission (10-speed) | Toyota Genuine ATF WS | 11.7 qt / 11.1 L |
| Transfer case (4WD) | Toyota Genuine ATF WS | 2.17 qt / 2.05 L |
| Front differential (4WD) | Toyota LT 75W-85 GL-5 | 1.4 qt / 1.29 L |
| Rear differential | Toyota LT 75W-85 GL-5 | 5.7 qt / 5.42 L without rear locker; 5.6 qt / 5.34 L with rear locker |
| Brake fluid | DOT 3 (SAE J1703) or DOT 4 (SAE J1704) | n/a |
| Power steering | Electric, no fluid | n/a |
The 3rd gen transfer case takes ATF WS, not gear oil. That is the single most important difference from the 2nd gen truck, which uses Transfer Gear Oil LF 75W. Do not cross-fill them.
Two cooling systems. The twin-turbo V6 has a separate intercooler coolant loop with its own 4.6 qt capacity and its own replacement interval in Toyota's maintenance schedule.
Spark plugs: DENSO EC22HPR-D7 iridium, gap 0.027 in. (0.7 mm). Toyota's 2024 maintenance guide replaces them every 40,000 miles; see our Tundra maintenance schedule.
Factory Tire Sizes and Wheel Torque
| TRUCK | FACTORY SIZES IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL | LUG NUT TORQUE |
|---|---|---|
| 2014–2021 Tundra | P255/70R18, P275/65R18, P275/55R20 | 97 ft-lb aluminum wheels; 154 ft-lb steel wheels |
| 2022+ Tundra (gas, 2024 manual) | 245/75R18, 265/70R18, 265/60R20 | 97 ft-lb aluminum wheels; 154 ft-lb steel wheels |
Cold inflation on the 2nd gen is 30 psi front and 33 psi rear on the sizes above; the 2024 manual lists 35 psi. Always use the placard on your door jamb, which matches your exact tire. Trim-specific sizes such as TRD Pro packages may not appear in the base manual.
Service Tips
- Pull the fill plug before the drain plug on any diff or transfer case, so a seized fill plug cannot strand an empty axle.
- Gear oil fills to the bottom of the fill hole with the truck level, not to a measured amount.
- ATF WS has no dipstick. The level is set at the overflow plug with the engine running and the fluid in a narrow temperature window. A drain and refill only replaces part of the fluid.
- 3rd gen transfer case = ATF WS. 2nd gen transfer case = Transfer Gear Oil LF 75W. The bottles look nothing alike, but shops still mix them up.
- After water crossings, check both diffs and the transfer case for milky oil.

The Toyota Truck Home Garage Tool List: What You Need for Every Job
To do your own oil, tire, brake and fluid work on a Toyota truck you need six things: a 3-ton floor jack, a pair of jack stands, a 1/2-inch click torque wrench that reaches at least 100 ft-lb (154 ft-lb for steel wheels on a 2024+ Tacoma or 2022+ Tundra), a metric socket set, an OBD2 scanner, and a drain pan. That kit costs roughly $300–400. Add a fluid pump for differential and transmission fills, a vacuum coolant filler, and a smoke machine for EVAP codes and you can handle almost every job on our maintenance schedules. Toyota's lug nut torque is 83 ft-lb on 2nd and 3rd gen Tacomas and 97 ft-lb on aluminum wheels for the 4th gen Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia and Land Cruiser 250, per the owner's manuals.

Toyota Towing Capacity Chart: Every Truck and SUV (2026)
Tundra up to 12,000 lb (2022+ gas, 2WD Double Cab, no SR Package; 11,450 lb hybrid). Sequoia up to 9,520 lb (2023+). Tacoma up to 6,500 lb (2024+; 6,800 lb on a 2016 to 2023 2WD V6 Access Cab). 4Runner 6,000 lb (2025+; 5,000 lb for 2010 to 2024). Land Cruiser 250 6,000 lb (2025+, GCWR 12,725 to 12,945 lb). These are maximums: many configurations are rated lower, so use the door-jamb label for your truck.

Toyota Tundra V35A Engine Recall Explained (2022–2024 Tundra, LX, GX)
Toyota has recalled about 272,000 gas-engine trucks across three NHTSA campaigns for the same problem: machining debris left in the 3.4L twin-turbo V35A engine can damage the main bearings, which can lead to engine knock, a stall and loss of power. 24V381 (2022–2023 Tundra and LX600, 102,092 vehicles) replaces the engine. 25V767 (2022–2024 Tundra, LX, and the 2024 GX550, 126,691 vehicles) and 26V320 (2024 Tundra, 43,566 vehicles) inspect the #1 main bearing with software and drive data, and replace the engine if needed. Toyota's codes: 24TA07/24TB07 and 25TA14/25TB14 (Toyota), 24LA04/24LB04 and 25LA07/25LB07 (Lexus). Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. All figures from NHTSA recall reports.
