The 2nd gen Sequoia shares its 5.7L V8 and 6-speed automatic with the Tundra, but not its drivetrain. The Sequoia's 4WD is full-time with a center differential, and it rides on independent rear suspension, so the transfer case oil, the rear diff capacity and the cooling capacity all differ from a Tundra. A Tundra spec sheet will get you close on the engine and wrong underneath. Every number here is from Toyota's own owner's manual for the 2020 Sequoia.
Reference capacities. Toyota prints these as reference amounts. Fill engine oil to the dipstick, gear oil to the bottom of the fill hole, and the automatic transmission at its overflow plug using Toyota's temperature procedure.
2nd Gen Sequoia Fluid Capacities
| FLUID | TYPE | CAPACITY |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil, 5.7L (3UR-FE) | SAE 0W-20 (5W-20 OK until the next change) | 8.5 qt / 8.0 L with filter; 7.9 qt / 7.5 L without |
| Coolant | Toyota Super Long Life Coolant | 13.1 qt / 12.4 L; 14.1 qt / 13.3 L with towing package |
| Automatic transmission (6-speed) | Toyota Genuine ATF WS | 11.7 qt / 11.1 L |
| Transfer case (4WD) | Gear oil API GL-5, SAE 75W-90 | 1.43 qt / 1.35 L |
| Front differential (4WD) | Toyota LT 75W-85 GL-5 | 2.17 qt / 2.05 L |
| Rear differential | Toyota LT 75W-85 GL-5 | 1.64 qt / 1.55 L |
| Power steering | DEXRON II or III ATF | n/a |
| Brake fluid | DOT 3 (SAE J1703) | n/a |
| Fuel tank | Unleaded, 87 octane | 26.4 gal / 100 L |
The transfer case is not the Tundra's. The Sequoia's full-time 4WD transfer case takes 75W-90 GL-5 gear oil, 1.43 qt. The 2014–2021 Tundra's part-time case takes Toyota Transfer Gear Oil LF 75W. Use the right one for the truck in front of you.
Spark plugs: DENSO SK20HR11 iridium, gap 0.043 in. (1.1 mm). Toyota's schedule replaces them at 120,000 miles.
Earlier years. Toyota sold the 2nd gen Sequoia from 2008 to 2022, and some early years also offered a 4.6L V8. The figures above are for the 5.7L from the 2020 manual. If you have a 4.6L or an early truck, confirm against your own owner's manual.
Factory Tire Sizes and Wheel Torque
| SIZE | WHEEL | COLD PRESSURE (FRONT / REAR) |
|---|---|---|
| P275/65R18 114T | 18 x 8J | 33 / 33 psi |
| P275/55R20 111H | 20 x 8J | 30 / 33 psi |
The full-size spare is a P255/70R18 on an 18 x 8 wheel, inflated to 33 psi. Lug nut torque is 97 ft-lb on aluminum wheels and 154 ft-lb on steel wheels. Use the tire placard on your door jamb for your exact truck.
Service Tips
- Pull the fill plug before the drain plug on the transfer case and both diffs.
- The rear diff is small. At 1.64 qt it takes less than half a gallon, so do not expect a Tundra-sized drain.
- ATF WS has no dipstick, and a drain and refill only replaces part of the fluid. Toyota's fill check is done at the overflow plug in a narrow temperature window.
- After water crossings, check the diffs and the transfer case for milky oil.
