The RAV4's maintenance schedule is short, and one thing catches owners out: oil is every 10,000 miles on the normal schedule, but many RAV4s live on the severe schedule without the owner realizing it. This guide lays out the gas RAV4 schedule from Toyota's 2025 maintenance guide and the Prime's schedule, then covers the severe-use rules and what owners do in practice.
Where these numbers come from. Toyota's 2025 RAV4 Maintenance Schedule (T-MMS-25RAV4) for the gas model, the 2024 RAV4 Prime maintenance schedule and the 2019 gas guide. We parsed the intervals directly from the PDFs. The schedule may differ for earlier years; check the guide for your year.

Brake fluid is not listed as a replacement item in the schedule we read; the guide only inspects all fluid levels.
Special Operating Conditions (Severe Use)
Toyota moves you to a shorter schedule if you do any of the following:
- Drive on dirt or dusty roads
- Tow a trailer, use a car-top carrier or carry heavy loads
- Idle for long periods
- Make repeated trips of less than five miles in freezing weather
On the severe schedule the guide calls for oil and filter every 5,000 miles, and brings forward automatic transmission fluid replacement to 60,000 miles, rear differential oil to every 15,000 miles (15k, 30k, 45k and on) and transfer case oil to 15,000, 45,000, 75,000, 105,000 and 135,000 miles. It also lists a 5,000 mile check of chassis and body nuts and bolts.
RAV4 Prime Schedule
The 2024 Prime guide uses a log format with its own items:
- Engine oil and filter: every 10,000 miles or 12 months.
- DC/DC converter air intake filter: inspect at every 5,000 mile step.
- Cabin and engine air filters: replace at 30,000 and 60,000 miles.
- Engine and inverter coolant: inspect at 15,000 and 45,000 miles, with entries at 30,000 and 60,000 we did not fully parse.
- At 60,000 miles: replace automatic transmission fluid and rear differential oil.
What Owners Actually Do
These are owner practices, not Toyota's schedule.
- Oil. Owners and mechanics in forum threads often change oil every 5,000 miles or six months, mainly to avoid fuel dilution on short winter trips, even though Toyota says 10,000. Some report using 0W-20 once when 0W-16 was unavailable.
- Fluids. Many owners replace automatic transmission fluid around 50,000 to 60,000 miles and rear differential fluid around 60,000 to 100,000 miles, rather than waiting for the severe schedule.
- 12V battery. Owners of hybrids and Primes report 12V batteries failing after about three years when most trips are short, and recommend a jump pack and occasional long drives. See our recall tracker for the recall tied to aftermarket 12V batteries on 2013–2018 trucks.
- Hybrid rear motor connector. Owners discuss corrosion at the rear motor high-voltage connector on 2019 and newer hybrids and treat it with a protective spray. We have not verified it as a Toyota-confirmed defect.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I change the oil in a Toyota RAV4?
Toyota's schedule says every 10,000 miles on the normal schedule and every 5,000 miles under severe conditions such as towing, dusty roads or short winter trips.
What oil does a RAV4 take?
Toyota specifies 0W-16 for the current 2.5L. Confirm the grade in your own manual, since older engines may differ.
When do RAV4 spark plugs need replacing?
At 120,000 miles on the 2025 schedule.
Does the RAV4 transmission fluid need to be changed?
The normal schedule inspects it at 30,000-mile steps. It is replaced at 60,000 miles under severe-use conditions. Many owners replace it around 50,000 to 60,000 miles anyway.
How often does the RAV4 Prime need service?
Oil every 10,000 miles or 12 months, air filters at 30,000 and 60,000 miles, and transmission fluid and rear differential oil at 60,000 miles.

2026 Toyota RAV4 TSB Tracker: Bulletins and Known Issues
Toyota has filed seven bulletins for 2026 RAV4 problems with NHTSA so far, and one fixes most of the infotainment complaints: T-SB-0050-26 (August 19, 2026) is a head unit software update, version 8612G42397, for the 2026 RAV4 Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid. It addresses reboots, black screens, an inoperative "Add a device" button, wireless Android Auto failing after remote start, and more, and it is covered by the 36-month/36,000-mile Basic Warranty. The other six are tech tips on CarPlay and audio dropouts (T-TT-0803-26), distance to empty (T-TT-0800-26), a Prime that won't charge (T-TT-0801-26), remote start (T-TT-0798-26), battery state of health (T-TT-0806-26) and a check engine code under investigation (T-TT-0810-26). There are two 2026 recalls and no bulletin yet for the sunglass holder, moonroof rattle or data module complaints owners post about.

Toyota RAV4 Common Problems by Generation and Powertrain
The 2019 and 2020 RAV4 have the most documented problems: NHTSA lists recalls for engine casting porosity, front lower control arms, power steering assist loss and fuel pumps on those years. 2019 and newer gas RAV4s are named in a December 2025 lawsuit over the 8-speed automatic transmission; the claims are unproven and Toyota has not recalled it. Hybrids and Primes have a repeated 12V battery drain complaint (Toyota issued a service bulletin for the 2021 Prime), and 2019–2022 hybrids have the rear power cable corrosion that Toyota Canada covered with an extended warranty. 2013–2018 gas RAV4s have a short recall list, mostly labels.

Toyota RAV4 Known Issues: NHTSA Complaints by Year
NHTSA's complaint database holds 880 complaints for the 2019 RAV4 and 635 for the 2020, against 90 to 333 for most other years. The 2019 spike is led by fuel and propulsion system (255) and engine (206) complaints, which line up with the fuel pump and engine casting recalls. The 2021 year is led by air bags (125), matching the occupant sensor and steering column recalls. 2023 to 2025 complaints run 90 to 176 a year, led by electrical system, engine and steering. The 2026 RAV4 has no NHTSA complaints on file yet. Its recalls are a load label and a Prime motor generator ECU update.

Toyota RAV4 MPG by Year: Gas, Hybrid and Prime
EPA combined mpg for the RAV4: gas 25–26 mpg (2013–2018), 28–30 mpg (2019–2025); hybrid 32 mpg (2016–2018), 39–40 mpg (2019–2025), 41–43 mpg (2026, hybrid only); RAV4 Prime 38 mpg on gas, 94 MPGe and a 42 mile electric range. Real-world data is thinner than EPA data: TrueDelta's 2020 AWD hybrid owners average 39 mpg against an EPA 40 combined, and Cars.com measured 42.7 miles of electric range in a 2021 Prime on a mixed loop. Cold weather, highway speed, towing and all-terrain tires all cut these numbers.
