2nd Gen Tacoma Maintenance Schedule: 5k to 120k Mile Checklist (2005–2015)

2nd Gen Tacoma Maintenance Schedule: 5k to 120k Mile Checklist (2005–2015)

The 2nd gen Tacoma's maintenance schedule surprises people who are used to newer Toyotas. There is no 10,000-mile oil interval, and the 4.0L V6 schedule calls for spark plugs every 30,000 miles, not 120,000. Both come down to the engine: the Tacoma kept the single VVT-i version of the 1GR-FE for its whole run, with standard nickel plugs, while the 4Runner and FJ moved to the dual VVT-i engine with iridium plugs in 2010. This checklist lays out Toyota's own schedule by mileage, including the dirt-road and towing services most owners never read.

Where this comes from. Every interval is from Toyota's 2015 Tacoma Warranty and Maintenance Guide, which has a separate log for each engine: Schedule A for the 4.0L V6 and Schedule B for the 2.7L. Toyota prints a guide per model year; the earlier 2nd gen trucks use the same engines, but check your year's guide on Toyota's owners site if you want the official log. Oil types and capacities are in our Tacoma fluids guide.

4.0L V6 Schedule at a Glance

Every visit, every 5,000 miles or 6 months: oil and filter, tire rotation, a fluid level check, wiper inspection, a floor mat check, and a visual brake check.

MILES / MONTHS REPLACE OR SERVICE (BEYOND EVERY VISIT) MAJOR INSPECTIONS
5k, 10k
15k / 18 mo Grease and re-torque propeller shaft (4WD) Full under-truck list
20k / 24 mo Cabin air filter
25k / 30 mo
30k / 36 mo Engine air filter, spark plugs, propeller shaft service Full list plus brake thickness and runout, fuel system, transfer case oil, transmission leaks
40k / 48 mo Cabin air filter
45k / 54 mo Propeller shaft service Full under-truck list
60k / 72 mo Engine and cabin air filters, spark plugs, propeller shaft service Full list plus drive belts (first check) and engine valve clearance
75k / 90 mo Propeller shaft service Full list plus drive belts
80k / 96 mo Cabin air filter
90k / 108 mo Engine air filter, spark plugs, propeller shaft service Full list plus drive belts
100k / 120 mo Cabin air filter, engine coolant (first change)
105k / 126 mo Propeller shaft service Full list plus drive belts
120k / 144 mo Engine and cabin air filters, spark plugs, propeller shaft service Full list plus drive belts and engine valve clearance

The pattern: oil every 5,000; cabin filter every 20,000; engine air filter and V6 spark plugs every 30,000; propeller shaft every 15,000; coolant at 100,000, then every 50,000 miles or 60 months; drive belts from 60,000, then every 15,000; valve clearance at 60,000 and 120,000.

Spark plugs every 30,000 on the V6. Toyota prints "replace spark plugs" at 30k, 60k, 90k and 120k on the 4.0L schedule, noting that plug service is required under the emissions warranty. It is not a misprint: the single VVT-i 1GR-FE uses nickel plugs. More in our 1GR-FE engine guide. The valve clearance item checks for tappet noise and vibration and adjusts only if needed.

Oil: 5,000 Miles, No Exceptions

The 2015 guide is blunt: the oil change interval is 5,000 miles or 6 months, and for trucks not certified for 0W-20 it stays at 5,000 "regardless of whether 0W20 motor oil is being used." Running a synthetic does not stretch it on this schedule. Use the grade on your oil cap and owner's manual; the 2005 and 2015 manuals call for 5W-30 on the V6, about 5.5 qt with the filter on 4x4 and PreRunner trucks.

2.7L Four-Cylinder Differences

The 2.7L (2TR-FE) follows Schedule B in the same guide. It is the same 5,000-mile oil interval and the same filters and inspections, with three differences:

  • Spark plugs at 120,000 only.
  • No valve clearance inspection.
  • Propeller shaft greasing applies to 4WD trucks and all four-cylinder PreRunners, not just 4WD.

The "Full Under-Truck List"

The 15k-type visits (15k, 45k, 75k, 105k) inspect ball joints and dust covers, brake lines and hoses, CV boots (4WD), engine coolant, exhaust pipes and mountings, front (4WD) and rear differential oil, the radiator and condenser, the steering gear box, and the steering linkage and boots.

The 30k-type visits (30k, 60k, 90k, 120k) add brake pad and rotor thickness and runout, the fuel lines, fuel tank band and vapor hoses, the fuel cap gasket, transfer case oil (4WD), and checking the transmission for leaks.

Special Operating Conditions

Do these only if most of your driving is under the condition. The 2015 guide lists two conditions; short trips and idling do not appear because oil is already every 5,000.

CONDITION 5k / 10k-TYPE VISITS 15k, 45k, 75k, 105k 30k AND 90k 60k AND 120k
Dirt or dusty roads Inspect ball joints, CV boots, engine air filter, steering linkage; grease and re-torque propeller shaft (4WD); tighten chassis and body nuts and bolts Inspect engine air filter; tighten nuts and bolts Replace transfer case oil (4WD); tighten nuts and bolts Replace transfer case oil (4WD); tighten nuts and bolts
Towing, roof carrier or heavy loads Grease and re-torque propeller shaft (4WD); tighten nuts and bolts Replace front (4WD) and rear diff oil; tighten nuts and bolts Replace front and rear diff oil, manual transmission oil, transfer case oil Replace front and rear diff oil, transfer case oil, transmission fluid or oil

The propeller shaft items include driving on salted roads. Salt-belt Tacomas should be greased at every 5,000-mile visit, and that is also when to look at the frame.

For a typical trail or tow Tacoma: diff oil every 15,000, transfer case oil every 30,000, and transmission fluid at 60,000 and 120,000.

Off-Road Days

For every day you drive through deep sand, mud or water, Toyota lists checks of the ball joints, brake lines, pads and rotors, differential oil, CV boots, engine air filter, chassis nuts and bolts, steering linkage, transfer case oil and transmission fluid, plus greasing the propeller shaft. After a deep water crossing, pull the diff and transfer case fill plugs and check for milky oil.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I change the oil in a 2nd gen Tacoma?

Every 5,000 miles or 6 months, per Toyota's 2015 maintenance guide, on both the 4.0L V6 and the 2.7L. The guide says the interval stays at 5,000 even if you run 0W-20 synthetic.

How often do 2nd gen Tacoma spark plugs need to be changed?

Every 30,000 miles on the 4.0L V6, per Toyota's schedule. The 2.7L four-cylinder changes them at 120,000.

What is done at the 2nd gen Tacoma 30,000 mile service?

Oil and filter, engine air filter, spark plugs (V6), tire rotation, greasing and re-torquing the propeller shaft (4WD), and a full inspection including brake thickness and runout, fuel lines, the fuel cap gasket, transfer case oil and transmission leaks.

What is done at the 60,000 mile service?

Everything in the 30k service plus the cabin air filter, the first drive belt inspection, and on the V6 a valve clearance check. Towing trucks also get both diffs, the transfer case and the transmission fluid changed.

When should the coolant be changed on a 2nd gen Tacoma?

At 100,000 miles or 120 months, then every 50,000 miles or 60 months.

Does a 2nd gen Tacoma need its valves adjusted?

The 4.0L V6 schedule has the valve clearance inspected at 60,000 and 120,000 miles, listening for tappet noise and vibration, and adjusted only if needed. The 2.7L schedule does not include it.

The Toyota Truck Home Garage Tool List: What You Need for Every Job

To do your own oil, tire, brake and fluid work on a Toyota truck you need six things: a 3-ton floor jack, a pair of jack stands, a 1/2-inch click torque wrench that reaches at least 100 ft-lb (154 ft-lb for steel wheels on a 2024+ Tacoma or 2022+ Tundra), a metric socket set, an OBD2 scanner, and a drain pan. That kit costs roughly $300–400. Add a fluid pump for differential and transmission fills, a vacuum coolant filler, and a smoke machine for EVAP codes and you can handle almost every job on our maintenance schedules. Toyota's lug nut torque is 83 ft-lb on 2nd and 3rd gen Tacomas and 97 ft-lb on aluminum wheels for the 4th gen Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia and Land Cruiser 250, per the owner's manuals.
