3rd Gen Tacoma: Harsh, delayed or shuddering shifts, flare between gears

Checks, in order

  1. Fluid level and color
Verify level using the factory procedure and look at the fluid on a white paper towel. Low fluid causes flare and slip; burnt fluid points to internal wear.
    medium $ · under about $50
  2. Cold vs warm behavior
Note whether it only happens in the first minutes of driving or only when hot. Cold-only harshness is often mild and normal; hot slip or flare is more concerning.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Engine and transmission mounts
A clunk when shifting Drive or Reverse can be a worn mount. Have a helper shift while you watch the engine move with the hood open.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Lockup shudder at steady cruise
A light shudder around 40 to 55 mph under gentle throttle that goes away when you lift or add throttle points to torque converter clutch behavior. A fluid service is the first attempt before any internal repair.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  5. Professional diagnosis
If fluid and mounts are good, a shop with a scan tool can look at line pressure and clutch data. Do this before agreeing to a rebuild or replacement.
    hard $$$ · shop-level job, $500+

Applies to: 2016 to 2023 Tacoma with the 2TR-FE 2.7L four and the 2GR-FKS 3.5L V6, with the 6-speed automatic or 6-speed manual. Engine-specific checks are labeled; everything else applies to both.
