Toyota Tundra Maintenance Schedule: 5k to 120k Mile Checklist (2007–2025)

Toyota Tundra Maintenance Schedule: 5k to 120k Mile Checklist (2007–2025)

The Tundra's schedule looks a lot like other modern Toyotas until you get to the 2022+ truck, where the twin-turbo V6 changes three things: spark plugs move from a 120,000-mile item to a 40,000-mile item, there is a second coolant system to service, and the brake booster vacuum pump gets its own check. And on both generations, the services that actually protect a truck that tows are hidden in Toyota's "special operating conditions" boxes. This checklist pulls everything out of Toyota's own guides and lines it up by mileage.

Where this comes from. The 2nd gen schedule is from Toyota's 2020 Tundra Warranty and Maintenance Guide (5.7L V8), cross-checked against the 2013 guide. The 3rd gen schedule is from the 2024 Tundra Warranty and Maintenance Guide. Toyota prints one per model year; your year's official log is on Toyota's owners site. Fluid specs are in our Tundra fluid capacities guide.

The Schedule at a Glance

Every visit (every 5,000 miles or 6 months) includes a tire rotation, a fluid level check, wiper inspection, a floor mat check and a visual brake check.

120k / 144 mo Same as 30k, plus spark plugs and drive belts Same as 30k, plus spark plugs, drive belts, and inspect the brake booster vacuum pump

Coolant (and, on the 3rd gen, intercooler coolant) is replaced first at 100,000 miles or 120 months, then every 50,000 miles or 60 months. Drive belts are inspected from 60,000, then every 15,000.

Propeller shaft: the 2020 and 2024 guides list re-torquing the propeller shaft bolts every 15,000 miles. The 2013 guide also lists greasing the propeller shaft spiders and slip yokes with lithium-base chassis grease, and the double cardan joint with molybdenum grease. If your truck's driveshaft has grease fittings, grease them when you re-torque.

Oil: 10,000 Miles, With Conditions

The 2013 and 2020 guides state the Tundra is certified for 0W-20, with a 10,000-mile or 12-month interval if 0W-20 is used. If 5W-20 was used because 0W-20 was not available, change it at 5,000 miles and go back to 0W-20. The 2024 guide says the same thing in different words, and all three say: if most of your driving is under a special operating condition, change oil and filter every 5,000 miles or 6 months, regardless of the oil.

The Full Under-Truck Inspection

At the 15k-type visits (15k, 45k, 75k, 105k): ball joints and dust covers, brake lines and hoses, cabin air filter, CV boots (4WD), engine coolant, exhaust pipes and mountings, front (4WD) and rear diff oil, radiator and condenser, steering gear, and steering linkage and boots. The 3rd gen adds the intercooler coolant.

At the 30k-type visits (30k, 60k, 90k, 120k), the cabin filter is replaced instead of inspected, and the list adds automatic transmission fluid cooler hoses, the transmission (checked for leaks), brake pad and rotor thickness and runout, the fuel lines, fuel tank band and vapor hoses, the fuel cap gasket, and transfer case oil (4WD).

Special Operating Conditions

Toyota says to do these only if most of your driving is under the condition. A truck that tows a camper all summer, or lives on a gravel road, qualifies.

CONDITION 5k / 10k-TYPE VISITS 15k, 45k, 75k, 105k 30k AND 90k 60k AND 120k
Dirt or dusty roads Oil every 5k; inspect ball joints, CV boots, engine air filter, steering linkage; re-torque propeller shaft; tighten chassis and body nuts and bolts Inspect engine air filter; oil; tighten nuts and bolts Replace transfer case oil (4WD); tighten nuts and bolts Replace transfer case oil (4WD); tighten nuts and bolts
Towing, roof carrier or heavy loads Re-torque propeller shaft; tighten nuts and bolts; oil every 5k Replace front diff oil (4WD); tighten nuts and bolts Replace front and rear diff oil and transfer case oil Replace automatic transmission fluid, front and rear diff oil, transfer case oil
Trips under 5 miles below 32°F (2nd gen guide) Oil every 5k Oil
Long idling or low-speed driving (2nd gen guide) Oil every 5k Oil

Notes on the table: Toyota's 15k-type towing service changes only the front diff; the rear diff is changed at the 30k-type visits. The 2024 log does not print "oil every 5k" under towing, but its explanation section says any special operating condition means oil every 5,000 regardless. The propeller shaft items include driving on salted roads.

For a Tundra that tows regularly, Toyota's own schedule adds up to: oil every 5,000; front diff every 15,000; rear diff and transfer case every 30,000; ATF at 60,000 and 120,000.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I change the oil in a Tundra?

Every 10,000 miles or 12 months with 0W-20, per Toyota's 2013, 2020 and 2024 maintenance guides. Every 5,000 miles if you used other oil, or if most of your driving is towing, dusty roads, short trips in freezing weather or long idling.

When do the spark plugs get changed on a Tundra?

2nd gen 5.7L and 4.6L V8: at 120,000 miles. 2022 and newer i-FORCE twin-turbo V6: every 40,000 miles (40k, 80k, 120k) per the 2024 maintenance guide.

What is done at the Tundra 30,000 mile service?

Oil and filter, engine air filter, cabin air filter, tire rotation, re-torquing the propeller shaft bolts, and a full inspection including brake thickness and runout, fuel lines, the fuel cap gasket and transfer case oil.

What is done at the Tundra 60,000 mile service?

The same as the 30k service plus the first drive belt inspection. On the towing schedule, the automatic transmission fluid, both diffs and the transfer case are changed.

When does the Tundra coolant need to be changed?

First at 100,000 miles or 120 months, then every 50,000 miles or 60 months. 2022+ trucks change the intercooler coolant on the same schedule.

Does the 2022+ Tundra need anything the old V8 did not?

Yes: spark plugs every 40,000 miles, the separate intercooler coolant at 100,000, and an inspection of the brake booster vacuum pump at 120,000.

The Toyota Truck Home Garage Tool List: What You Need for Every Job

To do your own oil, tire, brake and fluid work on a Toyota truck you need six things: a 3-ton floor jack, a pair of jack stands, a 1/2-inch click torque wrench that reaches at least 100 ft-lb (154 ft-lb for steel wheels on a 2024+ Tacoma or 2022+ Tundra), a metric socket set, an OBD2 scanner, and a drain pan. That kit costs roughly $300–400. Add a fluid pump for differential and transmission fills, a vacuum coolant filler, and a smoke machine for EVAP codes and you can handle almost every job on our maintenance schedules. Toyota's lug nut torque is 83 ft-lb on 2nd and 3rd gen Tacomas and 97 ft-lb on aluminum wheels for the 4th gen Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia and Land Cruiser 250, per the owner's manuals.
