Every maintenance schedule and troubleshooter on toyotadata ends with the same question from readers: what do I actually need to do this myself? This list answers it once, grouped by the jobs you will do, from a weekend oil change to pulling a rear axle. It is written for the trucks we cover, so it skips tools that do not apply and calls out the ones Toyota trucks specifically need.
How we built it. Torque specs come from Toyota owner's manuals. Tool picks are chosen for the job and for strong buyer ratings; prices are the retailer's listed price in October 2026 and change often. We have not lab-tested these tools. Where a specific Toyota job calls for a specific tool, we link to the guide that explains the job.
Toyota Lug Nut Torque by Truck
The first thing you will torque is a lug nut, and the spec is not the same across the lineup.
| TRUCK | LUG NUT TORQUE | SOURCE |
|---|---|---|
| 2nd gen Tacoma (2005–2015) | 83 ft-lb (113 N·m) | 2015 Tacoma owner's manual |
| 3rd gen Tacoma (2016–2023) | 83 ft-lb (113 N·m) | 2020 and 2023 owner's manuals |
| 4th gen Tacoma (2024+) | 97 ft-lb aluminum wheels; 154 ft-lb (209 N·m) steel wheels | 2025 owner's manual |
| 2nd gen Tundra (2007–2021) | 97 ft-lb (131 N·m) | 2020 owner's manual |
| 2nd gen Sequoia (2008–2022) | 97 ft-lb (131 N·m) | 2020 owner's manual |
| 3rd gen Tundra (2022+) | 97 ft-lb aluminum wheels; 154 ft-lb (209 N·m) steel wheels | 2024 owner's manual |
| Land Cruiser 250 (2024+) | 97 ft-lb (131 N·m) | 2025 owner's manual |
All of Toyota's manuals also say to re-check lug nuts after the first 1,000 miles on aluminum wheels (100 miles in the 2015 Tacoma manual). The 154 ft-lb steel-wheel spec on the 4th gen Tacoma and 3rd gen Tundra is why we recommend a torque wrench that reaches 250 ft-lb rather than the common 150 ft-lb models.

Our maintenance schedules list which of these jobs come due when: 3rd gen Tacoma, 5th gen 4Runner, Tundra.
Tier 2: Fluids and Diagnosis
Toyota differentials, transfer cases and most automatic transmissions are filled from below, through a fill plug on the side of the case, so you need a way to pump fluid up into them.
| TOOL | WHY A TOYOTA OWNER NEEDS IT | PRICE | BUY |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fluid transfer pump with ATF adapters, 8 L | Pumping gear oil into differentials and transfer cases, and ATF into fill-and-check transmissions | $78.90 | Shop at VEVOR |
| Fluid extractor, 9.5 L | Pulling fluid out of a reservoir or a case with no drain plug | $63.90 | Shop at VEVOR |
| Vacuum coolant refill kit | Fills the cooling system under vacuum so there is no air pocket; used with an air compressor | $32.90 | Shop at VEVOR |
| EVAP smoke machine, 12 V | Finds EVAP and vacuum leaks behind P0455/P0456-type codes and intake leaks | $61.99 | Shop at VEVOR |
| Borescope camera | Looking into cylinders, behind panels and inside frames for rust | $50.36 | Shop at VEVOR |
| Toyota Super Long Life Coolant, 50/50 | The coolant Toyota specifies; premixed | varies | Shop on Amazon |
| Toyota ATF WS, 1 qt | Transmission fluid for most Toyota automatics since the mid-2000s | varies | Shop on Amazon |
| Coolant pressure tester | Finding coolant leaks before they strand you | varies | Shop on Amazon |
Capacities and fluid types for each truck are in our fluids guides: Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia.
Tier 3: A/C Work
| TOOL | USE | PRICE | BUY |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4-way manifold gauge set (R134a and R1234yf couplers) | Reading high and low side pressures; works with both refrigerants | $68.90 | Shop at VEVOR |
| 3.5 CFM vacuum pump and gauge set | Pulling a vacuum after opening the system, before recharging; includes its own gauges, so buy this or the gauge set alone | $124.90 | Shop at VEVOR |
Check the refrigerant label under the hood before buying anything: older trucks use R134a and newer ones R1234yf, and the service couplers are different. Venting refrigerant to the air is illegal under the federal Clean Air Act; if the system still holds a charge, a shop with recovery equipment must remove it first.
Tier 4: Suspension, Axles and Driveline
These are the jobs that come with lifts, bigger tires, regears and high-mileage trucks.
| TOOL | WHY A TOYOTA OWNER NEEDS IT | PRICE | BUY |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ball joint press kit, 21 pc | Pressing ball joints and some bushings on independent front suspension | $69.90 | Shop at VEVOR |
| Rear axle bearing puller | Pulling semi-float rear axle bearings; VEVOR lists it for 1998–2008 Land Cruisers, 1995–2016 Tacomas and 1993–1998 T100s | $99.90 | Shop at VEVOR |
| Spindle locknut socket kit, 6 pc | Hub and spindle locknuts on 4WD hubs; check the sizes against your hub before buying | $63.90 | Shop at VEVOR |
| 1/2" air impact wrench | Axle nuts, lower control arm bolts and rusted hardware; needs a shop air compressor | $64.90 | Shop at VEVOR |
| Telescoping transmission jack, 0.75 ton | Lowering and refitting a transmission or transfer case | $209.90 | Shop at VEVOR |
| Engine hoist, 2 ton, folding | Engine swaps and pulls | $335.13 | Shop at VEVOR |
| Ball joint separator | Splitting tie rod ends and ball joints | varies | Shop on Amazon |
Before a regear or big-tire build, read our regear chart and regear cost guide: ring and pinion setup needs a dial indicator and experience, and most owners leave that part to a shop.
Tier 5: Trail and Recovery Gear
| TOOL | USE | PRICE | BUY |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 V onboard air compressor, 2.72 SCFM | Re-inflating after airing down for the trail | $193.90 | Shop at VEVOR |
| Recovery kit, 3 in x 30 ft strap and shackles | Snatch and tow recoveries | $55.90 | Shop at VEVOR |
| Traction boards, pair | Self-recovery in sand, mud and snow | $55.90 | Shop at VEVOR |
| 2 in hitch receiver shackle mount | A rated recovery point in the receiver | $26.99 | Shop at VEVOR |
| 48 in high-lift farm jack | Lifting on trail from a rated point such as a steel bumper or rock slider, not the factory plastic bumper | $79.90 | Shop at VEVOR |
Recovery gear only works with a rated recovery point on the truck. A tow hitch ball is not one.
What It Costs
Totals of the tools priced above, before tax and shipping:
| TIER | TOTAL |
|---|---|
| Tier 1 (VEVOR items: jack, 3-ton stands, torque wrench, grease gun, stool) | $328.50 |
| Tier 2 (fluid pump, extractor, coolant filler, smoke machine, borescope) | $288.05 |
| Tier 3 (vacuum pump and gauge set) | $124.90 |
| Tier 4 (ball joint press, bearing puller, locknut sockets, impact, transmission jack, engine hoist) | $843.63 |
| Tier 5 (compressor, recovery kit, boards, shackle mount, farm jack) | $412.59 |
Amazon items (socket set, breaker bar, scanner, drain pan, bleeder, fluids) are extra; their prices change too often to total.
The starter kit is the part that pays for itself fastest: a single shop oil change, tire rotation and brake fluid service on a truck can cost as much as the jack, stands and torque wrench combined.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the lug nut torque on a Toyota Tacoma?
83 ft-lb (113 N·m) on 2005–2023 Tacomas. On the 2024+ Tacoma it is 97 ft-lb (131 N·m) with aluminum wheels and 154 ft-lb (209 N·m) with steel wheels, per Toyota's owner's manuals.
What is the lug nut torque on a Toyota Tundra?
97 ft-lb on 2007–2021 Tundras. On 2022+ Tundras it is 97 ft-lb with aluminum wheels and 154 ft-lb with steel wheels, per the 2024 owner's manual.
What size torque wrench do I need for a Toyota truck?
A 1/2-inch drive click wrench that reaches at least 100 ft-lb covers most Toyota trucks. If you have a 2024+ Tacoma or 2022+ Tundra on steel wheels, you need one that reaches 154 ft-lb; a 20–250 ft-lb wrench covers every truck.
What jack do I need for a Tundra or Sequoia?
A 3-ton floor jack and 3-ton jack stands are the minimum for a full-size Toyota. Lifted trucks need taller stands; 6-ton stands reach about 23 inches.
What tools do I need to change differential fluid on a Toyota?
A socket or hex for the drain and fill plugs, a drain pan and a fluid pump, because Toyota differentials are filled through a side fill plug. Fill until the fluid reaches the bottom of the fill hole.

Cost to Regear a Tacoma, 4Runner or Tundra (2026 Prices)
A front and rear regear (for example to 4.88) on a 3rd gen Tacoma or 5th gen 4Runner costs about $2,200 to $5,600 installed, with about $3,500 typical. That is roughly $1,235–$1,800 for a gear package with master install kits, 11–18 hours of shop labor ($935–$3,550 at $85–$197/hr), and about $245–$250 for a speedometer calibrator. One California shop advertises both axles on a Tacoma, 4Runner or FJ for $2,199.99 parts and labor. A 2nd gen Tundra gear package runs about $1,459. Prices seen October 2026.

Cost of 33 vs 35 Inch Tires on a Tacoma or 4Runner: The Full Build (2026)
33s (285/70R17) on a 3rd gen Tacoma or 5th gen 4Runner: about $2,600–$3,300 for tires, wheels and mounting, or roughly $3,000–$6,700 with a level or lift, alignment and the extras. 35s (315/70R17): about $2,900–$3,500 for tires, wheels and mounting, but about $8,000–$14,500 as a complete build once you add a 3″ lift with upper control arms, a cab mount chop, a regear and a speedometer calibrator. The tires are the cheap part; going from 33 to 35 mostly buys a regear and more lift. Prices seen October 2026.

Cost to Lift a Tacoma or 4Runner: Every Tier Priced (2026)
Lifting a 3rd gen Tacoma costs about $450–$900 for a spacer level, $1,400–$1,900 for an Old Man Emu kit, $2,000–$2,800 for Bilstein 6112/5160, $2,900–$3,400 for an Icon Stage 2 kit, and $3,000–$4,000 for Fox or King coilovers, installed with an alignment. Add $670–$800 for upper control arms if you go past about 2.5″ of front lift. A 5th gen 4Runner Icon kit is $2,090 (Stage 1) to $3,032 (Stage 2 with UCAs) before install. Parts prices seen October 2026; install figures are owner reports.
