Toyota Towing Capacity Chart: Every Truck and SUV (2026)

Toyota sells five vehicles that people tow with, and the headline number for each is the best case. This chart collects the maximum for the current and previous generation of each, straight from Toyota's owner's manuals, and links to the full by-year, by-trim guide for each model.

Land Cruiser 250 (2025+). The 2025 owner's manual states the gross trailer weight must never exceed 6,000 lb. GCWR is 12,725 lb on the model code TJH250L-GNZUZA and 12,835 to 12,945 lb on TJH250L-GNZAZA (the exact figure depends on the passenger count and equipment). Unbraked trailers are limited to 1,650 lb, and the manual calls for sway control above 2,000 lb and a weight-distributing hitch above 5,000 lb. For tire sizes, see our Land Cruiser 250 and GX 550 tire guide.

The Rules That Apply to All of Them

Every Toyota manual we read shares the same structure, and the same four limits decide what you can tow.

  • Trailer weight rating (TWR): the maximum loaded weight of the trailer.
  • Gross combination weight rating (GCWR): the maximum for truck, passengers, cargo and trailer together. Weigh the loaded truck and subtract it from GCWR.
  • Tongue weight: 9% to 11% of the trailer weight for a conventional hitch, and it counts against the truck's cargo capacity.
  • Equipment thresholds: trailer brakes above the unbraked limit (1,000 lb on Tundra, Sequoia and Tacoma 4th gen; 1,650 to 1,655 lb on the 4Runner and Land Cruiser 250), sway control above 2,000 lb, and a weight-distributing hitch above 5,000 lb on the current-generation manuals that state it.

Not covered here: the Lexus GX and LX, the Highlander and Grand Highlander, and the older 4Runner (before 2010), Tacoma (before 2015) and Land Cruiser generations. If you want one of those added, tell us which.

Bigger tires do not change Toyota's rating, but they raise your effective gearing and make a heavy tow harder on grades. See our regear chart.

Maintenance & Problems

The Toyota Truck Home Garage Tool List: What You Need for Every Job

To do your own oil, tire, brake and fluid work on a Toyota truck you need six things: a 3-ton floor jack, a pair of jack stands, a 1/2-inch click torque wrench that reaches at least 100 ft-lb (154 ft-lb for steel wheels on a 2024+ Tacoma or 2022+ Tundra), a metric socket set, an OBD2 scanner, and a drain pan. That kit costs roughly $300–400. Add a fluid pump for differential and transmission fills, a vacuum coolant filler, and a smoke machine for EVAP codes and you can handle almost every job on our maintenance schedules. Toyota's lug nut torque is 83 ft-lb on 2nd and 3rd gen Tacomas and 97 ft-lb on aluminum wheels for the 4th gen Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia and Land Cruiser 250, per the owner's manuals.

That is roughly $1,235–$1,800 for a gear package with master install kits, 11–18 hours of shop labor ($935–$3,550 at $85–$197/hr), and about $245–$250 for a speedometer calibrator. One California shop advertises both axles on a Tacoma, 4Runner or FJ for $2,199.99 parts and labor. A 2nd gen Tundra gear package runs about $1,459. Prices seen October 2026.

Cost of 33 vs 35 Inch Tires on a Tacoma or 4Runner: The Full Build (2026)

33s (285/70R17) on a 3rd gen Tacoma or 5th gen 4Runner: about $2,600–$3,300 for tires, wheels and mounting, or roughly $3,000–$6,700 with a level or lift, alignment and the extras. 35s (315/70R17): about $2,900–$3,500 for tires, wheels and mounting, but about $8,000–$14,500 as a complete build once you add a 3″ lift with upper control arms, a cab mount chop, a regear and a speedometer calibrator. The tires are the cheap part; going from 33 to 35 mostly buys a regear and more lift. Prices seen October 2026.
