80 Series Land Cruiser: Center diff lock or locker light stays on, or won't engage

Checks, in order

  1. Let it align
With the switch off, drive slowly straight forward and then in reverse a few feet. Lights that stay on while the truck binds usually clear once the gears unload.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Engagement conditions
Check your owner's manual for the conditions each lock needs (transfer position, center lock, speed). Lockers that 'don't work' are often just not meeting them.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Fuses, switch and wiring
Check the related fuses and look for damaged wiring near the actuators, where trail debris and rust do their work.
    medium $ · under about $50
  4. Actuator
Actuators can stick or fail. Repair or replace after confirming power and signal reach it.
    hard $$ · about $50 to $500

Applies to: FZJ80 (1993–1997 US, 1FZ-FE), Lexus LX 450 (1996–1997), FJ80 (1991–1992 US, 3F-E). Engine checks assume the 1FZ-FE unless noted.
