4th Gen 4Runner: Driveshaft clunk, vibration or wheel bearing noise

Checks, in order

  1. U-joints and slip yoke
Twist the driveshaft by hand and look for play at the joints. Grease the slip yoke if there is a fitting and replace any rusty joint.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Wheel bearings
Lift the truck and rock each wheel, then spin it by hand and listen. A growl or roughness points to the bearing.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  3. Front CV axles on 4WD
Clicking on turns with the wheel cranked over points to a worn CV joint. Look for torn boots and flung grease.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  4. Differential fluid and seals
Check fluid in the front and rear differentials and look for pinion seal leaks. Low or burnt fluid explains a whine.
    easy $ · under about $50
  5. Tire balance and wear
A vibration at speed that matches wheel speed is often a balance or tire problem. Check it before the driveline.
    easy $ · under about $50

Applies to: 2003 to 2009 4Runner with the 4.0L 1GR-FE V6 and the 4.7L 2UZ-FE V8, 2WD and 4WD. Engine specific items are labeled, and some issues apply mainly to early model years.
