4th Gen Tacoma: Clunk or rattle over bumps, loose steering feel

Safety: Play in steering or suspension joints can affect control. If you find movement at a wheel, have the truck inspected before driving much further.

Checks, in order

  1. Tire pressure
Set pressures to the placard and recheck. Overinflated tires amplify harshness and rattles.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Cargo and bed items
Remove loose items from the bed, cab and tailgate area. Many rattles come from loose cargo or a rear cover.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Sway bar links and bushings
Grab the links and push by hand to feel for play. Worn links are a common source of a light clunk.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Wheel play
With the front end raised, rock each wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock, then at 3 and 9, and note any movement.
    medium $ · under about $50
  5. Dealer inspection
If the truck is under warranty, have the dealer document and fix suspension or steering play. Keep the repair order.
    medium $ · under about $50

Applies to: 2024 and newer Tacoma with the 2.4L turbo i-FORCE (T24A-FTS) and the i-FORCE MAX hybrid, with the 8-speed automatic or the 6-speed manual. Platform is new, so checks lean on general practice and are labeled where they apply to only one powertrain.
