4th Gen Tacoma: 6-speed manual: clutch feel, grinding, hard to shift or rev-match oddities

Checks, in order

  1. Rev-match behavior
Check the manual for the rev-match setting and try the truck with it on and off. The auto blip on downshifts can feel like a fault when it is by design.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Clutch pedal feel
A pedal that sticks low or feels soft points to the hydraulic system. Check the clutch fluid reservoir level and inspect for leaks.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Slipping under load
Engine rpm rising without speed in a higher gear under load means the clutch may be slipping. Note mileage and use, since towing wears the clutch faster.
    medium $ · under about $50
  4. Grinding into a gear
Grinding into one gear may mean clutch not fully releasing, worn synchro or low fluid. Check the transmission fluid level and condition.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  5. Dealer check
If the clutch or shifter issue is new and the truck is covered, have the dealer verify and document it.
    medium $ · under about $50

Applies to: 2024 and newer Tacoma with the 2.4L turbo i-FORCE (T24A-FTS) and the i-FORCE MAX hybrid, with the 8-speed automatic or the 6-speed manual. Platform is new, so checks lean on general practice and are labeled where they apply to only one powertrain.
