4th Gen Tacoma: Brake pedal feels odd, brakes squeal, grind or pulse

Safety: A pedal that goes to the floor, sinks slowly, or any brake fluid leak means do not drive the truck until it is inspected.

Checks, in order

  1. Pad and rotor condition
Remove a wheel and measure pad thickness. Look at rotor surfaces for grooves and rust ridges.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Light rust squeal after sitting
A scraping noise on the first few stops after rain or a long park is surface rust on the rotors and typically clears.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Brake fluid level
Check the reservoir level and condition. A falling level means a leak or worn pads.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Caliper slides
Dry slide pins cause uneven wear and noise. Clean and lubricate with brake-safe grease.
    medium $ · under about $50
  5. Dealer check for pedal feel faults
A pedal that changes feel on hybrids, with a warning light, needs a scan of the brake system. Do not drive if the brake warning is on.
    hard $$$ · shop-level job, $500+

Applies to: 2024 and newer Tacoma with the 2.4L turbo i-FORCE (T24A-FTS) and the i-FORCE MAX hybrid, with the 8-speed automatic or the 6-speed manual. Platform is new, so checks lean on general practice and are labeled where they apply to only one powertrain.
