1st Gen Tacoma: Clunk, knock or rattle going over bumps

Checks, in order

  1. Sway bar links and bushings
Grab the links and push or pull by hand with the truck on the ground, and look at the bushings for cracking or a gap around the bar. Loose links clunk at low speed over small bumps.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Loose wheels and lug nuts
Check lug nut torque and look for hammered wheel stud holes. A loose wheel clunks and can be dangerous.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Shocks and mounts
Look for oil on the shock body, and check the upper and lower mounts and bushings for cracking or movement. Bounce each corner; it should settle in one rebound.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Rear leaf spring hardware
Inspect the shackles, U-bolts and spring eye bushings for movement, cracks or rust. A cracked leaf or loose U-bolt knocks over bumps. Squeaks usually come from dry bushings or worn spring pads.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  5. Control arm bushings and ball joints
Pry the control arms and check for movement at the bushings and ball joints. Do this after the cheap checks above.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500

Applies to: 1995.5 to 2004 Tacoma with the 2RZ-FE 2.4L, 3RZ-FE 2.7L and 5VZ-FE 3.4L V6, 2WD, PreRunner and 4WD. Code-based checks assume OBD-II (1996 and newer); earlier trucks may use a different diagnostic setup.
