Owner forums are full of RAV4 complaints, but they are hard to compare year to year. NHTSA's complaint database is a single place where owners file the same form for every model year, so the counts, while still not failure rates, can be lined up. This guide does that, then ties the spikes to the recalls behind them.
How this list is built. On October 20, 2026 we queried NHTSA's complaints-by-vehicle service for the Toyota RAV4, model years 2013 through 2026, and counted complaints and component mentions. One complaint can name more than one component, so component counts can add up to more than the total. Complaints are voluntary reports. They are not failure rates, they are not verified by NHTSA or Toyota, and they do not account for how many vehicles were sold in each year.

Reading the Spikes
2019 and 2020. These are the years with the most complaints, and their top components match documented recalls: fuel and propulsion system complaints beside the fuel pump recall (20V682), and engine complaints beside the engine casting recall (20V064). Steering and control arm recalls (20V373, 20V286) cover the same years. See the problems guide and the recall tracker.
2021. Air bags are the top component (125), which fits the occupant classification sensor recall (23V865, 2020–2021) and the 2020 steering column recall (20V734).
2013 to 2018. Electrical system is the top component every year, and rises from 74 in 2013 to 130 in 2018. NHTSA does not say what the electrical complaints are about. The recall list does not explain it either, since the only electrical-leaning campaign in those years is the 12V battery clamp fit recall (23V734).
2023 to 2025. Complaints run 160, 176 and 90. Electrical system and engine lead again, with steering, brakes and forward collision avoidance close behind. Recent years have had less time to accumulate complaints, so compare them with caution.
The 2026 RAV4
NHTSA has no complaints on file for the 2026 RAV4 as of our query. The 2026 model has two recalls on record: 26V571, an incorrect load label on the hybrid, and 26V659, a motor generator ECU error on the Prime that can reduce power or shut down the plug-in system at higher speed, fixed with a software update. Owners on forums describe infotainment glitches and interior rattles on the redesigned 2026 truck. We could not verify those reports, so we are not listing them as known issues. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, and ask your dealer about any service bulletin for a specific symptom.
How to Use This
- Check the model year you are buying against the table. A high count is a reason to read the recalls, not to rule the year out.
- Run the VIN. Most of the serious 2019–2021 problems have a free recall remedy.
- File your own complaint at nhtsa.gov if something is wrong. The database is only as good as the reports in it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which RAV4 year has the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2019 model year, with 880 complaints, followed by the 2020 with 635.
What are the most common RAV4 complaints?
Electrical system is the most-mentioned component in most years from 2013 to 2018. For 2019 it is fuel and propulsion system, for 2020 engine, and for 2021 air bags.
Does the 2026 RAV4 have any complaints?
None on file with NHTSA as of October 20, 2026. It has two recalls: a hybrid load label and a Prime ECU software update.
Do NHTSA complaints prove a defect?
No. They are unverified owner reports. They show where to look, and recalls show what Toyota has confirmed.

2026 Toyota RAV4 TSB Tracker: Bulletins and Known Issues
Toyota has filed seven bulletins for 2026 RAV4 problems with NHTSA so far, and one fixes most of the infotainment complaints: T-SB-0050-26 (August 19, 2026) is a head unit software update, version 8612G42397, for the 2026 RAV4 Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid. It addresses reboots, black screens, an inoperative "Add a device" button, wireless Android Auto failing after remote start, and more, and it is covered by the 36-month/36,000-mile Basic Warranty. The other six are tech tips on CarPlay and audio dropouts (T-TT-0803-26), distance to empty (T-TT-0800-26), a Prime that won't charge (T-TT-0801-26), remote start (T-TT-0798-26), battery state of health (T-TT-0806-26) and a check engine code under investigation (T-TT-0810-26). There are two 2026 recalls and no bulletin yet for the sunglass holder, moonroof rattle or data module complaints owners post about.

Toyota RAV4 Common Problems by Generation and Powertrain
The 2019 and 2020 RAV4 have the most documented problems: NHTSA lists recalls for engine casting porosity, front lower control arms, power steering assist loss and fuel pumps on those years. 2019 and newer gas RAV4s are named in a December 2025 lawsuit over the 8-speed automatic transmission; the claims are unproven and Toyota has not recalled it. Hybrids and Primes have a repeated 12V battery drain complaint (Toyota issued a service bulletin for the 2021 Prime), and 2019–2022 hybrids have the rear power cable corrosion that Toyota Canada covered with an extended warranty. 2013–2018 gas RAV4s have a short recall list, mostly labels.

Toyota RAV4 Maintenance Schedule: Gas and Prime
Toyota's gas RAV4 schedule (2025 model) lists service every 5,000 miles or six months. Engine oil and filter every 10,000 miles, engine and cabin air filters every 30,000 miles, spark plugs at 120,000 miles, and engine coolant at 100,000 miles, then every 50,000. Automatic transmission fluid is inspected at 30,000-mile intervals and replaced early only under severe conditions. Towing, dusty roads and short winter trips put you on the severe schedule: oil every 5,000 miles. The Prime follows its own schedule, with oil every 10,000 miles or 12 months.

Toyota RAV4 MPG by Year: Gas, Hybrid and Prime
EPA combined mpg for the RAV4: gas 25–26 mpg (2013–2018), 28–30 mpg (2019–2025); hybrid 32 mpg (2016–2018), 39–40 mpg (2019–2025), 41–43 mpg (2026, hybrid only); RAV4 Prime 38 mpg on gas, 94 MPGe and a 42 mile electric range. Real-world data is thinner than EPA data: TrueDelta's 2020 AWD hybrid owners average 39 mpg against an EPA 40 combined, and Cars.com measured 42.7 miles of electric range in a 2021 Prime on a mixed loop. Cold weather, highway speed, towing and all-terrain tires all cut these numbers.
