"content_markdown": "> QUICK ANSWER\n>\n> **NHTSA's complaint database holds 880 complaints for the 2019 RAV4 and 635 for the 2020, against 90 to 333 for most other years.** The 2019 spike is led by **fuel and propulsion system** (255) and **engine** (206) complaints, which line up with the fuel pump and engine casting recalls. The 2021 year is led by **air bags** (125), matching the occupant sensor and steering column recalls. **2023 to 2025** complaints run 90 to 176 a year, led by electrical system, engine and steering. **The 2026 RAV4 has no NHTSA complaints on file yet.** Its recalls are a load label and a Prime motor generator ECU update.\n\nOwner forums are full of RAV4 complaints, but they are hard to compare year to year. NHTSA's complaint database is a single place where owners file the same form for every model year, so the counts, while still not failure rates, can be lined up. This guide does that, then ties the spikes to the recalls behind them.\n\n**How this list is built.** On October 20, 2026 we queried NHTSA's complaints-by-vehicle service for the Toyota RAV4, model years 2013 through 2026, and counted complaints and component mentions. One complaint can name more than one component, so component counts can add up to more than the total. Complaints are voluntary reports. They are not failure rates, they are not verified by NHTSA or Toyota, and they do not account for how many vehicles were sold in each year.\n\n<figure class=\"chart\" style=\"margin:24px 0\">\n<svg components match documented recalls: fuel and propulsion system complaints beside the fuel pump recall (**20V682**), and engine complaints beside the engine casting recall (**20V064**). Steering and control arm recalls (**20V373**, **20V286**) cover the same years. See the [problems guide](/guides/toyota-rav4-common-problems-by-generation/) and the [recall tracker](/guides/toyota-rav4-recall-tracker-2013-2026/).\n\n**2021.** Air bags are the top component (125), which fits the occupant classification sensor recall (**23V865**, 2020–2021) and the 2020 steering column recall (**20V734**).\n\n**2013 to 2018.** Electrical system is the top component every year, and rises from 74 in 2013 to 130 in 2018. NHTSA does not say what the electrical complaints are about. The recall list does not explain it either, since the only electrical-leaning campaign in those years is the 12V battery clamp fit recall (**23V734**).\n\n**2023 to 2025.** Complaints run 160, 176 and 90. Electrical system and engine lead again, with steering, brakes and forward collision avoidance close behind. Recent years have had less time to accumulate complaints, so compare them with caution.\n\n## The 2026 RAV4\n\nNHTSA has no complaints on file for the 2026 RAV4 as of our query. The 2026 model has two recalls on record: **26V571**, an incorrect load label on the hybrid, and **26V659**, a motor generator ECU error on the Prime that can reduce power or shut down the plug-in system at higher speed, fixed with a software update. Owners on forums describe infotainment glitches and interior rattles on the redesigned 2026 truck. We could not verify those reports, so we are not listing them as known issues. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, and ask your dealer about any service bulletin for a specific symptom.\n\n## How to Use This\n\n1. Check the model year you are buying against the table. A high count is a reason to read the recalls, not to rule the year out.\n2. Run the VIN. Most of the serious 2019–2021 problems have a free recall remedy.\n3. File your own complaint at nhtsa.gov if something is wrong. The database is only as good as the reports in it.\n\n## Frequently Asked Questions\n\n### Which RAV4 year has the most NHTSA complaints?\n\nThe 2019 model year, with 880 complaints, followed by the 2020 with 635.\n\n### What are the most common RAV4 complaints?\n\nElectrical system is the most-mentioned component in most years from 2013 to 2018. For 2019 it is fuel and propulsion system, for 2020 engine, and for 2021 air bags.\n\n### Does the 2026 RAV4 have any complaints?\n\nNone on file with NHTSA as of October 20, 2026. It has two recalls: a hybrid load label and a Prime ECU software update.\n\n### Do NHTSA complaints prove a defect?\n\nNo. They are unverified owner reports. They show where to look, and recalls show what Toyota has confirmed.\n\n## Related RAV4 Guides\n\n- [Toyota RAV4 Towing Capacity by Year, Trim and Hybrid](/guides/toyota-rav4-towing-capacity-by-year-trim/)\n- [Toyota RAV4 MPG by Year: Gas, Hybrid and Prime](/guides/toyota-rav4-mpg-by-year-gas-hybrid-prime/)\n- [Toyota RAV4 Recall Tracker: Every Recall 2013–2026](/guides/toyota-rav4-recall-tracker-2013-2026/)\n- [Toyota RAV4 Tire Size by Year and Trim (2013–2025)](/guides/toyota-rav4-tire-size-by-year-and-trim/)\n- [Toyota RAV4 Maintenance Schedule: Gas and Prime](/guides/toyota-rav4-maintenance-schedule-gas-and-prime/)\n- [Toyota RAV4 Common Problems by Generation and Powertrain](/guides/toyota-rav4-common-problems-by-generation/)\n- [RAV4 Prime Cost Calculator: Electric vs Gas Per Mile](/guides/toyota-rav4-prime-electric-vs-gas-cost-calculator/)\n- [2026 Toyota RAV4 TSB Tracker: Bulletins and Known Issues](/guides/toyota-rav4-2026-tsb-tracker-known-issues/)\n- [Toyota Towing Capacity Chart: Every Truck and SUV](/guides/toyota-towing-capacity-chart-tundra-tacoma-4runner-sequoia/)\n\nSources: NHTSA, [complaints by vehicle](https://www.nhtsa.gov/) (Toyota RAV4, model years 2013–2026), queried October 20, 2026; NHTSA recall data for campaign numbers."
