Every popular vehicle collects complaints, so the useful question is which problems are backed by something harder than a forum post. This guide sorts RAV4 problems by how well they are documented: federal recalls first, then a Toyota service bulletin, then court filings and extended warranties, and last the owner reports we could not verify.
How we sorted it. Recalls are from NHTSA (see our full RAV4 recall tracker). Other items cite the source we read. Owner reports are labelled as such and are not counts or failure rates.
Documented by NHTSA Recalls
| GENERATION | PROBLEM | CAMPAIGN |

| 2021 Prime | Hybrid system can stall the engine | 23V041 |
| 2024 | Brake line can be damaged by the caliper bracket (gas) | 24V911 |
| 2025 | Improper welds on front seat brackets (gas) | 26V256 |
| 2026 Prime | Motor generator ECU error can reduce power or shut down the plug-in system | 26V659 |
2013–2018 gas RAV4s have a much quieter record: a trailer hitch module that can cut off trailer lights (15V011), an ABS actuator on the 2016 (16V198), power steering ECU checks on 2014–2015 trucks (15V144), and a handful of label recalls.
Documented by a Toyota Service Bulletin
12V battery drain on the 2021 RAV4 Prime. Toyota service bulletin TSB005622 (June 2022) says some 2021 Primes may show a depleted 12V auxiliary battery with the vehicle off, because the hybrid control unit does not go to sleep. Listed triggers include a tow or jump-start after a discharge, disconnecting and reconnecting the 12V battery, and fitting a new one. Toyota's fix is a logic update to the hybrid control unit. Documented by Lawsuits and Warranty Extensions
8-speed automatic transmission (2019 and newer gas). A lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas names the RAV4 2019-present among many Toyota and Lexus models with the UA80-family 8-speed transmission. It alleges heat buildup that burns the transmission fluid and software that upshifts and engages the torque converter clutch too early, leading to early failure. These are unproven allegations. As of the December 2025 report we read, Toyota had made no public response and no recall had been issued. CarComplaints report
Hybrid power cable corrosion, "Cablegate" (2019–2022 hybrid). Toyota Canada extended the warranty on the high-voltage cable under the floor and the rear electric motor's cable to 8 years or 160,000 km on select 2019–2022 RAV4 Hybrids, with a free repair if a dealer validates excessive corrosion. The 2023 hybrid has a new cable design and the Prime is not covered. We found this in Canadian coverage, so we do not know what, if anything, applies in the U.S. Guide Auto Web
Complaint Data
On CarComplaints, the 2019 RAV4 ranks as the worst RAV4 model year, with 137 complaints, and transmission is its worst category: hesitation and lurching at slower speeds. Complaint counts are voluntary reports, not failure rates, and they say nothing about how many vehicles were sold. CarComplaints RAV4 page
Owner Reports We Could Not Verify
These come from owner forum threads. Treat them as leads.
- 12V battery death on hybrids and Primes. Owners blame parasitic drain from the smart key, parking brake and charging logic, and recommend a jump pack and drives of 20 minutes or more. Reports of batteries lasting about three years on short trips are common. Our maintenance guide covers it.
- Oil dilution on short cold trips. Owners describe fuel and moisture reaching the oil on repeated short winter trips, which is why many change oil at 5,000 miles instead of Toyota's 10,000.
- Harsh 1-3 shifts and whining on 2019 and newer gas models. This matches the lawsuit and complaint data above, but we have no failure rate.
- Prime range in winter. Owners report electric range well under the 42-mile rating in cold weather. See our MPG guide.

What to Do If You Own One
- Run your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. The 2019–2020 recalls are the ones that matter most.
- Ask your dealer whether any software update or technical service bulletin applies to your VIN.
- On a hybrid or Prime, keep the 12V healthy and look at the underbody connectors for corrosion if you drive on salted roads.
- If a problem is not a recall, get it documented at a dealer. That paper trail is what warranty and goodwill requests rest on.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the worst year for the Toyota RAV4?
By documented problems, 2019 and 2020: engine casting, control arm, steering and fuel pump recalls. CarComplaints also ranks 2019 as the worst year by complaints.
Does the RAV4 have transmission problems?
A December 2025 lawsuit alleges defects in the 8-speed automatic used in 2019 and newer gas RAV4s. The claims are unproven, and we found no recall.
Why does my RAV4 Hybrid or Prime battery keep dying?
Owners point to 12V drain from short trips and vehicle systems. Toyota issued a bulletin for the 2021 Prime's hybrid control unit not sleeping.
What is RAV4 Cablegate?
Corrosion of the high-voltage and rear motor cables on 2019–2022 hybrids. Toyota Canada extended the warranty on them to 8 years or 160,000 km.
Are older RAV4s (2013–2018) more reliable?
Their NHTSA recall list is shorter and mostly labels. That says nothing about wear items and repair cost.

2026 Toyota RAV4 TSB Tracker: Bulletins and Known Issues
Toyota has filed seven bulletins for 2026 RAV4 problems with NHTSA so far, and one fixes most of the infotainment complaints: T-SB-0050-26 (August 19, 2026) is a head unit software update, version 8612G42397, for the 2026 RAV4 Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid. It addresses reboots, black screens, an inoperative "Add a device" button, wireless Android Auto failing after remote start, and more, and it is covered by the 36-month/36,000-mile Basic Warranty. The other six are tech tips on CarPlay and audio dropouts (T-TT-0803-26), distance to empty (T-TT-0800-26), a Prime that won't charge (T-TT-0801-26), remote start (T-TT-0798-26), battery state of health (T-TT-0806-26) and a check engine code under investigation (T-TT-0810-26). There are two 2026 recalls and no bulletin yet for the sunglass holder, moonroof rattle or data module complaints owners post about.

Toyota RAV4 Known Issues: NHTSA Complaints by Year
NHTSA's complaint database holds 880 complaints for the 2019 RAV4 and 635 for the 2020, against 90 to 333 for most other years. The 2019 spike is led by fuel and propulsion system (255) and engine (206) complaints, which line up with the fuel pump and engine casting recalls. The 2021 year is led by air bags (125), matching the occupant sensor and steering column recalls. 2023 to 2025 complaints run 90 to 176 a year, led by electrical system, engine and steering. The 2026 RAV4 has no NHTSA complaints on file yet. Its recalls are a load label and a Prime motor generator ECU update.

Toyota RAV4 Maintenance Schedule: Gas and Prime
Toyota's gas RAV4 schedule (2025 model) lists service every 5,000 miles or six months. Engine oil and filter every 10,000 miles, engine and cabin air filters every 30,000 miles, spark plugs at 120,000 miles, and engine coolant at 100,000 miles, then every 50,000. Automatic transmission fluid is inspected at 30,000-mile intervals and replaced early only under severe conditions. Towing, dusty roads and short winter trips put you on the severe schedule: oil every 5,000 miles. The Prime follows its own schedule, with oil every 10,000 miles or 12 months.

Toyota RAV4 MPG by Year: Gas, Hybrid and Prime
EPA combined mpg for the RAV4: gas 25–26 mpg (2013–2018), 28–30 mpg (2019–2025); hybrid 32 mpg (2016–2018), 39–40 mpg (2019–2025), 41–43 mpg (2026, hybrid only); RAV4 Prime 38 mpg on gas, 94 MPGe and a 42 mile electric range. Real-world data is thinner than EPA data: TrueDelta's 2020 AWD hybrid owners average 39 mpg against an EPA 40 combined, and Cars.com measured 42.7 miles of electric range in a 2021 Prime on a mixed loop. Cold weather, highway speed, towing and all-terrain tires all cut these numbers.
