6th Gen 4Runner: Something is wrong on a new 4Runner: warranty, recalls and where to start

Checks, in order

  1. Run your VIN for open recalls
Enter your VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup or Toyota's owner site. Recalls are free to fix, and several early-production campaigns have been software based.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Write down when it happens
Note the date, mileage, speed, temperature, drive mode and whether the engine was cold or warm. Photos or a phone video of warning lights and noises help a service advisor reproduce it.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Ask for a bulletin and software check
Ask the dealer to check for technical service bulletins and calibration updates that match your symptom. Get the visit recorded on a repair order even if they cannot reproduce the fault.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Check warranty terms before DIY
Modifications such as lifts, tunes or aftermarket electronics can complicate warranty coverage. Look at your warranty booklet or ask the dealer before changing anything related to the symptom.
    easy $ · under about $50

Applies to: 6th generation 4Runner, 2025 and newer, with the 2.4L turbocharged i-FORCE and the i-FORCE MAX hybrid, both with the 8-speed automatic. This is a new platform with little long-term history, so most entries are general symptoms; when the truck is under warranty, the dealer is the right first stop.
