6th Gen 4Runner: 4WD or drive mode won't engage, warning light, or odd noise on turns

Checks, in order

  1. Follow the engagement procedure
Check the owner's manual for the speed limit and gear for shifting into 4H or 4L. Shifting out of the allowed range can leave a light flashing.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Tire sizes and pressures
Mismatched tire diameters or uneven wear can bind a 4WD system on pavement. Keep the pressures even and rotate on schedule.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Binding in tight turns
If the truck is in 4H or 4L, tight turns on dry pavement can bind the driveline on many 4WD systems. Switch back to 2WD or the on-road mode and see if it clears; check the manual for your trim's drive modes.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Note the warning message
Take a photo of the exact message and the drive mode selected. Messages narrow down which system has the fault.
    easy $ · under about $50
  5. Dealer diagnosis
Transfer case actuators, sensors and locker systems are warranty items on a new truck.
    hard $$$ · shop-level job, $500+

Applies to: 6th generation 4Runner, 2025 and newer, with the 2.4L turbocharged i-FORCE and the i-FORCE MAX hybrid, both with the 8-speed automatic. This is a new platform with little long-term history, so most entries are general symptoms; when the truck is under warranty, the dealer is the right first stop.
