2nd Gen Tacoma: Humming or rumbling from the front that changes with speed

Checks, in order

  1. Noise changes in turns
On a safe stretch, swerve gently left and right at speed. If the hum gets louder turning one way, the bearing on the opposite loaded side is a suspect.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Wheel play and spin test
Jack the front, grab the tire at 3 and 9 o'clock and rock. Spin the wheel by hand and feel for roughness or listen for grinding.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Rule out tires
Cupped or choppy tire wear can sound just like a bearing. Rotate the front tires to the rear and see if the sound changes.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Replace the bearing or hub
On 4WD trucks the front bearing is a hub assembly; replace one side and check the other since they wear similarly. Use a quality part, since cheap hubs fail early.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500

Applies to: 2005 to 2015 Tacoma with the 2TR-FE 2.7L four-cylinder and 1GR-FE 4.0L V6, 2WD, PreRunner and 4WD. Both engines use timing chains and a serpentine-belt-driven water pump.
