2nd Gen Tacoma: Steering feels stiff, rattles or wanders

Safety: Steering parts that are loose can fail. If you can feel more than a small amount of play, have the truck inspected before driving at speed.

Checks, in order

  1. Power steering fluid and belt
Check the fluid level and condition, and inspect the serpentine belt. Low fluid or a slipping belt gives a heavy feel and whining.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Intermediate shaft U-joint
Look at the joint where the steering column shaft meets the steering gear, usually near the firewall. Twist it by hand with the engine off; any clunk, binding or notchiness points to a worn joint.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  3. Tie rod ends and ball joints
Have a helper rock the steering wheel while you watch each joint for movement. Any visible slop means replace.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Tires and alignment
Check pressures and wear patterns. Uneven wear or an alignment that is out causes wandering and pulling.
    easy $ · under about $50
  5. Steering rack condition
Look for leaks at the rack boots and listen for knocking. Rack wear is less common than the cheaper items above, so rule those out first.
    hard $$$ · shop-level job, $500+

Applies to: 2005 to 2015 Tacoma with the 2TR-FE 2.7L four-cylinder and 1GR-FE 4.0L V6, 2WD, PreRunner and 4WD. Both engines use timing chains and a serpentine-belt-driven water pump.
