2nd Gen Tacoma: Vibration or jolt from the driveline under acceleration or when stopping

Checks, in order

  1. U-joint play
With the truck in neutral and supported, grab the driveshaft at each joint and twist or push. Any movement or rust-colored dust at the cups means replace.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Slip yoke grease
Lubricate the slip yoke and make sure it slides freely. A dry yoke binds and gives a jolt when decelerating.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Driveshaft condition
Look for dents, missing balance weights and bent areas. Check the center support bearing on shafts that have one.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Transmission and transfer case mounts
Torn mounts let the driveline move and clunk. Check by prying while a helper shifts between Drive and Reverse.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  5. Lift angles
If lifted, check the pinion angle and consider shims or a carrier bearing drop. Extra angle makes vibration at speed.
    hard $$ · about $50 to $500

Applies to: 2005 to 2015 Tacoma with the 2TR-FE 2.7L four-cylinder and 1GR-FE 4.0L V6, 2WD, PreRunner and 4WD. Both engines use timing chains and a serpentine-belt-driven water pump.
