2nd Gen Tacoma: 4WD won't engage, 4WD light flashing, or grinding in four-wheel drive

Checks, in order

  1. Shift the transfer case properly
Shift from 2H to 4H while moving slowly on a loose surface, and into 4L from neutral while stopped. If the lever or switch moves and the indicator lights up, the transfer case is shifting.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Fluid in the transfer case and front diff
Check the fill plugs; fluid should reach the bottom of the hole. Low or very old fluid causes grinding and sticky shifts.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Indicator light behavior
A flashing 4WD light means the system isn't finishing the shift. Note whether it flashes in 4H or 4L, and scan for related codes.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. CV axles and boots
Look for torn boots and flung grease. Clicking in turns means the axle joint is worn.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  5. Front differential disconnect and actuator
If the transfer case shifts but the front wheels don't drive, check the front disconnect and its actuator. Have a shop test this with the front wheels off the ground.
    hard $$ · about $50 to $500

Applies to: 2005 to 2015 Tacoma with the 2TR-FE 2.7L four-cylinder and 1GR-FE 4.0L V6, 2WD, PreRunner and 4WD. Both engines use timing chains and a serpentine-belt-driven water pump.
