The Sequoia's towing number went down between generations before it went back up. A 2008 Sequoia with the tow package is rated 10,000 lb, a 2015 to 2022 Sequoia is rated 7,400 lb at most, and the redesigned 2023 and newer hybrid is advertised at up to 9,520 lb. That is not the truck getting weaker. Toyota's 2015 and later manuals state the ratings meet SAE J2807, the industry towing standard, and the 2008 manual makes no such statement, so the old and new numbers are not directly comparable.
Where these numbers come from. The "GCWR and TWR" tables in Toyota's owner's manuals for the 2008, 2015, 2019 and 2022 Sequoia (2nd gen), plus Toyota's published specifications for the 2024 Sequoia (3rd gen). We did not have access to a 3rd gen owner's manual, so we do not publish a per-trim table for 2023 and newer.
2023+ Sequoia (3rd Gen)
Toyota's Sequoia page lists towing of up to 9,520 lb and an i-FORCE MAX hybrid output of 437 hp and 583 lb-ft. The page gives one headline figure and no breakdown by grade or drive. The word "up to" matters: your truck's exact rating depends on its configuration and is printed on the door-jamb label. Do not tow at the headline number unless your label says so.
2015 to 2022 Sequoia (2nd Gen, 5.7L V8)
From the 2015, 2019 and 2022 owner's manuals. Only the 5.7L V8 is listed, and the tables carry the SAE J2807 statement.
| DRIVE | TOWING (TWR) | GCWR |
|---|---|---|
| 2WD | 7,200–7,400 lb | 13,400–13,600 lb |
| 4WD | 7,000–7,100 lb | 13,500–13,600 lb |
The 2015 manual breaks the 2WD figure out by model code: 7,400 lb (GKTSKA), 7,300 lb (GKTLKA) and 7,200 lb (GKTZKA), against 7,100 lb and 7,000 lb for the 4WD codes. The same codes with the flex-fuel engine (3UR-FBE) carry the same ratings. Unbraked trailers: 1,000 lb (453 kg).
2008 Sequoia (2nd Gen, Early)
From the 2008 owner's manual, which lists two engines and a tow package. This manual's ratings are not SAE J2807 ratings.
| ENGINE | DRIVE | WITHOUT TOW PACKAGE | WITH TOW PACKAGE |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4.7L V8 | 2WD | 6,200–6,300 lb | 7,700–7,800 lb |
| 4.7L V8 | 4WD | 5,600–6,000 lb | 7,100–7,500 lb |
| 5.7L V8 | 2WD | 8,100–8,300 lb | 9,100–10,000 lb |
| 5.7L V8 | 4WD | 7,800–8,000 lb | 8,800–9,600 lb |
The highest rating is 10,000 lb for the 2WD 5.7L with the tow package (GCWR 16,000 lb).
The Numbers That Actually Limit You
- GCWR: truck, passengers, gear and trailer together. On a 2015 to 2022 Sequoia the limit is 13,400 to 13,600 lb, so a heavily loaded truck loses trailer capacity pound for pound.
- Tongue weight: 9% to 11% of the trailer weight. A 7,000 lb trailer puts 630 to 770 lb on the hitch.
- Sway control and weight distribution: sway control above 2,000 lb; a weight-distributing hitch above 5,000 lb (2020 manual).
- Trailer brakes: required above 1,000 lb on every manual that lists an unbraked figure.
- Maintenance: towing is Toyota's severe-service schedule. See the Sequoia maintenance schedule and Sequoia fluid capacities.
Bigger tires do not change Toyota's rating, but they raise your effective gearing. See the regear chart and the Tundra and Sequoia tire fitment guide.
