5th Gen 4Runner: Water in the cabin, door locks not working, or rear window stuck

Checks, in order

  1. Sunroof drains
If equipped, open the sunroof and look for drain holes in the corners of the tray. Clear them with compressed air or a flexible plastic line. Never use wire that can puncture the hose.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Wet carpet location
Find where the water collects: front footwells point to a sunroof drain or cowl drain, while rear sections suggest the hatch seal.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Door lock actuator
If one door fails to lock or unlock, listen for the motor at the door when you press the switch. A buzz with no movement means a failed actuator. Silence suggests wiring or a fuse.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  4. Hatch window track
Clean and lubricate the rear window track and check the motor fuse. Debris in the track is a common reason it hangs up.
    medium $ · under about $50
  5. Door and window seals
Inspect the rubber seals for tears and compression. A slow leak at a worn seal often shows up in heavy rain.
    easy $ · under about $50
