5th Gen 4Runner: A/C blowing warm or not cold enough

Checks, in order

  1. Compressor clutch engagement
With the engine running and A/C on max, watch the front of the compressor. The clutch plate should click in and spin. If it does not, check the fuse and relay.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Cabin air filter and airflow
A clogged filter weakens airflow and makes the A/C feel weak. Replace it if it is dirty.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Condenser and fans
Check the condenser in front of the radiator for debris and bent fins. Make sure the fans run when the A/C is on.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Pressure and leak test
Have a shop read the high and low side pressures. Low pressure points to a leak, and a dye test or electronic leak detector finds it.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  5. Compressor replacement
If the compressor has failed, the system needs flushing and the receiver or drier and expansion device replaced to protect the new unit.
    hard $$$ · shop-level job, $500+
