5th Gen 4Runner: 4WD won't engage, indicator flashes, or binding in 4WD

Checks, in order

  1. Shift procedure and speed
Follow the manual: shift 2H to 4H at low speed on a loose surface, and 4L only when stopped in Neutral. Shifting too fast or on dry pavement can leave the indicator flashing.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Tire sizes and tread wear
Mismatched or very unevenly worn tires create binding and can trigger problems. Measure the circumference of all four.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Fluid levels
Check the transfer case and both differentials for correct level and any leaks. Low or wrong fluid causes noise and shift trouble.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Switch and linkage
Check the transfer case shift motor connector (if equipped) and the 4WD switch wiring for corrosion or damage, and the lever linkage for binding on lever-type trucks.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  5. Transfer case actuator
On trucks with an electric shift motor, if it does not move at all, have the actuator tested or replaced.
    hard $$$ · shop-level job, $500+
