5th Gen 4Runner: Whine or howl from the rear or front differential, or gear oil leak

Checks, in order

  1. Fluid level
Remove the fill plug with the truck level. Fluid should be at the bottom of the opening. Low fluid often comes with a leak at the pinion or axle seals.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Change the gear oil
Drain and refill with the gear oil specified for your axle in the factory manual. Check the drain plug magnet for fuzz or metal chunks.
    medium $ · under about $50
  3. Note when it makes noise
Whine on acceleration, coast or at one speed range helps separate a worn pinion bearing from a ring and pinion or axle bearing.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Pinion seal and axle seals
Look for oil on the pinion flange, the back of the axle shafts and the inside of the wheel. A leaking seal is a repair that does not require new gears.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  5. Bearing or gear set
If noise persists after fresh fluid, a shop can measure backlash and bearing preload. This is typically a specialized job.
    hard $$$ · shop-level job, $500+
