3rd Gen Tacoma: Rear differential leak, whine or noise

Checks, in order

  1. Recall lookup
Enter your VIN on Toyota's recall site or the NHTSA site to see if the rear differential recall applies and was completed. Repairs under a recall are free at a dealer.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Look for wet or oily housing
Inspect the differential cover, the housing seam, pinion seal and axle seals for seepage and dirt stuck to oil.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Gear oil level and condition
Check at the fill plug. Metal sparkle or a burnt smell on the magnetic plug means wear.
    medium $ · under about $50
  4. Whine vs. clunk
Note if the noise changes under acceleration versus coast. A clunk on throttle changes can be a worn U-joint or backlash, while a constant whine points to bearings or gears.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  5. Seals and bearings
Pinion and axle seal replacement is common once a leak is confirmed. If noise persists, a shop should inspect bearings and gear mesh.
    hard $$$ · shop-level job, $500+

Applies to: 2016 to 2023 Tacoma with the 2TR-FE 2.7L four and the 2GR-FKS 3.5L V6, with the 6-speed automatic or 6-speed manual. Engine-specific checks are labeled; everything else applies to both.
