3rd Gen Tacoma: Oil leak, burning smell or oil level dropping

Safety: Do not drive if the oil pressure warning is on or the level is below the minimum mark.

Checks, in order

  1. Dipstick and oil change history
Check the level on level ground with the engine off for a few minutes. Track how much you add over a set distance.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Clean and trace the leak
Degrease the engine and drive for a few days, then look for the highest wet spot. Oil runs downward and misleads.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Valve cover and oil filter area
Check the valve cover gaskets and the oil filter housing and seal. These are common seepage points on most engines.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  4. Oil pan and drain plug
Inspect the pan gasket and drain plug washer. Use a new washer at every oil change.
    easy $ · under about $50
  5. Front of engine
Wet oil on the front cover or crank seal area needs a proper diagnosis because repairs there are labor heavy. Confirm the source before ordering parts.
    hard $$$ · shop-level job, $500+
