3rd Gen Tacoma: Rust on the frame, brake lines or underbody

Safety: Rust that has eaten through the frame, brake lines or fuel lines is a safety problem. Have a shop inspect it before further driving.

Checks, in order

  1. Frame inspection
With the truck up, tap along the frame rails and crossmembers with a hammer. Flaking, bubbling or soft spots need attention.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Brake and fuel lines
Look at the steel lines along the frame and near the tank for heavy corrosion or wetness.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Skid plates and body mounts
Check for trapped mud and rust around skid plates and body mounts, which hold moisture.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Wax or oil undercoating
A wax or oil-based undercoating after cleaning helps slow surface rust. Wash the underbody after salt exposure.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  5. Professional rust repair
Perforated areas need welding or replacement and should not be covered up with paint.
    hard $$$ · shop-level job, $500+
