3rd Gen Tacoma: Battery keeps dying, dash lights flicker or electronics act up

Checks, in order

  1. Battery test
Have the battery load-tested. Old batteries often read fine at rest but fail under load.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Accessories and hardwired add-ons
Unplug dash cams, USB chargers, lights and trackers that stay powered with the truck off, and see if the problem stops.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Charging voltage
With the engine running, battery voltage should be roughly 13.5 to 14.8 V. Much lower or higher points to the alternator or its regulator.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Parasitic draw test
Use a multimeter in series with the negative cable after the truck sleeps, then pull fuses one at a time to find the circuit that draws.
    medium $ · under about $50
  5. Grounds and connectors
Check body and engine ground points for corrosion, since poor grounds cause odd electrical behavior.
    medium $ · under about $50
