3rd Gen Tacoma: Brakes squeal, grind, pulse or feel soft

Safety: A soft or sinking brake pedal, a pull to one side under braking, or any fluid leak means do not drive the truck until it has been inspected.

Checks, in order

  1. Pad thickness and rotor condition
Remove a wheel and look at pad thickness and rotor surfaces. Deep grooves, a lip or heat spots mean new rotors and pads.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Caliper slides and hardware
Dry or seized slide pins cause uneven pad wear and noise. Clean and lubricate them with brake-safe grease.
    medium $ · under about $50
  3. Brake fluid level and condition
Check the reservoir. A falling level means a leak or worn pads, and dark fluid should be flushed.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Pulsing pedal
Pulsing under braking is typically rotor thickness variation or runout. Have rotors measured, then replaced or resurfaced as the specs allow.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  5. Hoses, lines and master cylinder
Inspect rubber hoses for bulges and steel lines for rust. A pedal that slowly sinks points to an internal master cylinder leak.
    hard $$$ · shop-level job, $500+
