3rd Gen 4Runner: Battery light on, dim lights or battery keeps dying

Checks, in order

  1. Battery test
Have the battery load tested. A battery that won't hold a charge is the most common cause of a dead truck.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Belt and tension
Check the serpentine belt for glazing, cracks and slack. A slipping belt means low charging output.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Alternator output
With the engine running, battery voltage should be about 13.5 to 14.7 V. Much lower points to the alternator or its wiring.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Connections and grounds
Clean the alternator plug, battery terminals and engine ground. A loose connection can cause a charging light.
    easy $ · under about $50
  5. Parasitic drain
Put a meter in series with the battery after the truck sleeps for a while. Pull fuses one at a time to find the circuit drawing power.
    medium $ · under about $50

Applies to: 1996 to 2002 4Runner with the 2.7L 3RZ-FE four-cylinder and the 3.4L 5VZ-FE V6, 2WD and 4WD, manual and automatic. Where a check only applies to one engine it says so.
