2nd Gen Tacoma: Automatic shifts hard or slips, or manual clutch is hard or slipping

Checks, in order

  1. Fluid level, color and smell
Check the automatic fluid per the manual's procedure. Dark, burnt-smelling or low fluid explains many shift problems; see the fluid capacities guide for the right type.
    easy $ · under about $50
  2. Scan for transmission codes
A solenoid, speed sensor or lockup code points to a specific fault. Fix electrical items before suspecting internal wear.
    easy $ · under about $50
  3. Clutch hydraulics
Check the clutch reservoir and look for leaks at the master and slave cylinders. A soft or sinking pedal usually means a failing master or slave.
    easy $ · under about $50
  4. Mounts and driveline
Worn engine or transmission mounts can feel like harsh shifts. Check for movement and torn rubber.
    medium $$ · about $50 to $500
  5. Clutch wear or internal damage
A clutch that slips under load or an automatic that stays slipping after a fluid service needs a shop evaluation.
    hard $$$ · shop-level job, $500+

Applies to: 2005 to 2015 Tacoma with the 2TR-FE 2.7L four-cylinder and 1GR-FE 4.0L V6, 2WD, PreRunner and 4WD. Both engines use timing chains and a serpentine-belt-driven water pump.
